GPU Upgrade Recommendation

Hello,
im wanting to upgrade from an r9 290. i have an i7 4790k cpu.
my goal is to run games in 1440p with good frames. i was looking at the rx 580, but im out of the loop with hardware and not quite sure. My budget would be between 400-800AU

The rx580 is not your typical 1440p or 144hz card. You will require a 1070 to push most games at high/ultra. Since your CPU can support it and you have the budget, you should get that for best results...
