GPU upgrade, RX 470 8GB or RX 480 4 GB? Will it be a performance jump?

Current Build
HD 7870 ghz
i3 6100
Asus H110 MA
500 watt EVGA 80+ certified PSU
8 GB DDR4 2133hz RAM

so my question is: coming from the HD 7870 would i see a substantial jump in frames per second by switching to a 470 8GB or 480 4GB? i saw that the 470 is designed for 1080p 60hz gaming and thats all im aiming for, but do you think the 480 would be a safer bet just to maybe get an extra year of cranking at 1080p?

Yes, that would be quite the jump in performance. I would go for the RX 480 for 1080p/60hz, games are already quite demanding and games will just continue to get more complex.

also, anyone know when a 480 4gb will be released with a better power pin connector? i've never OCed a GPU but i think i might try after i get this new one.

Anything above 4GB VRAM is for higher resolutions, you plan on playing at 1080p so you should just need the 4GB version.

These are pretty much useless.

An HD7970 is (non GHz, nonOC) is similar to a GTX950. An HD7970 is about 24% faster than an HD7870.

That gets you very roughly 2.5X perf jump from HD7870 to RX-480.

However this varies a lot by the game. In particular the RX-480 is on average the same as an R9-390 however depending on the game it is between 80% and 120% the performance due to some changes they made.

You can read about it but certain settings like anti-aliasing can make the RX-480 do worse but some settings make it do better compared to what you'd think would be about the same GCN architecture.

Again though, you can very roughly estimate a 2.5X perf jump with variation around that point depending on the game, settings, CPU etc.

Other:
1) RX-470
Should get pretty close to the RX-480 for as little as $150, however it's hard to say how real-world pricing and availability will pan out.

The RX-470 should be a pretty great card if the price is right. Something like an Asus Strix RX-470 4GB with 1x8-pin or 2x6-pin for maybe $170USD or so would be great.
