GPU upgrading advice.

So with the Amazon sale round the corner, I was hoping to upgrade my GTX 760. My original plan was to buy another and run them in SLi till I realised my motherboard (Z87-HD3) doesn't support Sli, only Crossfire. So I'm left with a couple other options:

  • Replace my motherboard and buy a second 760 (Possibly sell my original motherboard too)
    Go for a single better GPU, probably a 980Ti / 970, or maybe even an R9 390X.
The main reason I wanted an upgrade is because I'm going to be picking up a 144Hz monitor, so I needed a system that can run games in High/Ultra at 1080p@100+FPS. I'm just not sure what would be the best option for me, I'm not hugely fussed about price, I have about £450 to spend on this upgrade so I'm more concerned with what would be the smartest choice, whether the cheaper option of mobo replacement+760 would be a better decision over a single more powerful GPU. Thanks.

Go with the single card as you suggested. Your board is fine, no sense changing it and going thru all that OS re-installation for no reason. Even a 144 MHz display still requires the same amount of pixel/texel rendering per frame as a 60 Hz display. So you shouldn't suffer any performance loss going to the faster refresh rate monitor.
