GPU usage is being limited by something which results in low FPS

Hey, so my issue is what the title implies, GPU is going at around 50-60% usage which results bad/lower FPS.

Here > https://imgur.com/a/imi0I8a is what HWMonitor and MSI Afterburner is showing me when playing Rust, temperatures don't seem to be too high or anything, how do I fix this?

It only happens from time to time and sometimes it does use 90-100% !!! Please help!

e:
So normally when the GPU is at 90-100% usage I get over 144fps in Rust. When it drops down to the 50-60% I get 50-80fps.

PC SPECS

Asus Strix 1080ti

I7-8700k

16gb ram

Seasonic Prime Gold 850W PSU

Well either its a problem with rust, most likely in my opinion the game is not exactly what I would call optimized. Or something is choking, its certainly not a CPU bottleneck. So maybe RAM, storage, or power. Is the game on your HDD? How much RAM do you have? Does this happen in any other games?

Typically when GPU usage is low it is due to the CPU "bottlenecking" the GPU. What is your CPU usage? Is it pegged out to 100%?. The 8700k should be more than adequate to run that game. What are your CPU temps? If your CPU is thermal throttling it will downclock to prevent damage. This could cause your GPU useage to drop. Run a game in window mode and check your CPU temps through Intel XTU. If they are spiking to 100C you have an issue with your cooling.

I am having this same issue on pretty much every "demanding" game, so not on one like League of Legends.

I edited my post and put my specs on there

also, I think rust may be on my sdd, but I've had issues with games that are on my hdd as well

Now that you mention it, HWMonitor shows that the CPU has gone up to high 80 degrees Celsius... they haven't*** passed 90C yet though.

I've already once reapplied my thermal paste, maybe I put too little or something... I am using a Noctua D15S air cooler and I thought that would be enough...

edit: CPU temps are at around 40-45C idle

Those temps are fine. It is not a thermal throttle.

You have a very nice system, so something is not running correctly or it is optimization with Rust. I have not played Rust, so I cant say much about it.

Go run a bench at userbenchmark.com and leave a link here with the results. It will tell you if the hardware is running as it should.

The same issue has happened with a couple of other games as well :S

But anyways, here are the results: http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/9105410

Sidenote: Do you think I should upgrade my SDD/HDD?

Your hardware is running fine and I don't think you need to upgrade anything. I don't think that is a solution.

It could be a driver issue, I double it but it is worth a shot. Use this DDU tool to do a clean uninstall of the display drivers in safe mode. Then download the most recent drivers from Nvidia and see if that helps.

Solution

I am not going to mark this as the solution just yet because I probably haven't tested it enough yet, but it seems to be better now. Even though the GPU doesn't use 90-100% it stays above 100fps constantly and stays around 144FPS, which it is capped to so it doesn't need to use more power.

But yeah like I said, so far so good! I will now try other games and see if I have similar issues!!

edit: Added another image on the imgur link, I am not getting any lagg in GTA, but I am not reaching 144FPS either, because the GPU wants to stay at 60-70%. It only went up to 100% when I turned "Frame scaling mode" up all the way.

The FPS is constantly around a 100 so I guess I won't complain, just weird that it doesn't want to go to 144fps, do you know if I can somehow check if I have like a "global" v-sync turned on by Nvidia?
