So i have an MSI R9 390, got it from a friend used, but i know what the card has been through. He bought it on my amazon account and all that so i know he didn't do anything to the card. But i was running a stress test in MSI after burner to get my temps before i attempted to over clock it and it shot up to 94 Celsius and thermal throttled its self on it base clock after about 4 mins. So i decided to re-paste the GPU with some Arctic Silver 5. It helped a little as it took longer to reach 94 degrees. about 8 mins this time. But i dont think it should get that hot with the monster cooler that's on it. So i will not be oveclocking until this is resolved but i was just wondering if this is normal operation during the stress test. My ambient room temp is 85 F. (i know thats hot but ac is not an option for me. lol) It idles at 46 with the fans at 76%. During games like GTA V the card sits in the low 70 with fan speed at 100% which still seems way to high given the fan speed. The card is clean no dust and i have ample airflow in my case. But it seems no matter what i do the card still hits 94 during the test.

Heres a screen cap of my most recent Stress test just to show thats whats its doing. http://imgur.com/a/DxkYO

Yeah it...
These cards don't overclock particularly well and under a 100% load stress test that is probably not all that surprising. You'll find most (any?) games won't push it to 100% on a continual basis, so you aren't really operating it under "typical" work loads. You can also maybe set up a more aggressive fan profile to help cool it, but you shouldn't overclock it so aggressively that it gets to over 85 deg under normal usage.

I have a Sapphire R9 390 Nitro which is factory OCed to 1040/1500MHz and it gets to about 70 deg under typical loads.

My fan curve is pretty aggressive where once the card starts hitting 65 degrees the fans go to 100%. It just seems to me that every other forum post i see and review i watch their 390s idle a lot lower and under load are a lot cooler. Especially because my fan speeds are so high compared to theirs.

Yeah it does seem a little high to be sure. I would suggest getting batter airflow through your case (i.e. add some fans). That seems to really help others. For the record, my Sapphire R9 390 idles at 42 deg (ambient temp is 15 deg - it's winter here in New Zealand!), which is only 4 deg cooler than yours. Here are some links that might help you.

Solution

I have the airflow im sure of that. 2 120s in the front for intake 2 120s exhaust and and a side intake. its not airflow. im highly picky about my cable management so ive made sure thats nice and neat. maybe its just my case its self but i doubt it. (phantom 410) Its summer here in New York but besides the point. i guess ill just deal with it till i upgrade. lol. Thanks for the help though.
