GPU wont recognize DVI-D?

I'm connecting a dual link DVI cable from a VG248QE to a Radeon 5850, but the monitor isn't recognizing the card. I've also tried with an HDMI to no avail. The monitDVI-D or HDMI to the VG248 just fine, though. Is this just a case of needing a driver?
