If i was to upgrade my gpu, should i get a gtx 960 4gb acx 2+ or r9 280x 3gb? which would run with more fps? or a refurbished r9 290 for the same price ($300 CAD)

specs:
i7 3770k, 8gb ram, z77a gd65, corsair 750w 80+ bronze, r9 270x.

Hopefully the cards go on sale in the winter and get for cheap

Solution
Yes, the 280x is about 20% better than the 960. Your PSU is more than enough for a 280x or 290. You could get away with a quality 600w PSU if you really needed to.
As said, the 290 is way faster than the 960. So is the 280x. As a nice bonus, both the 290 and 280x have better DX 12 support and you should see a nice performance boost in upcoming games that use it.

If you want, I have an extra 280x that I could sell to you on the cheap. If you're interested, PM me.

He would really only save money with the 960 if he had very expensive electricity. Otherwise the 960 is overpriced, hence why the 280x takes the $200 price bracket on Tom's Best GPU for the money chart.

Some models of the 280x go near 200 but they are generally more expensive. Not sure why you seem so against the 960 as a viable option, but you should try to keep bias aside

And some models of GTX 960 go up to $360

I'll be honest, I've liked AMD a bit more ever since I purchased a 970 that didn't have the features Nvidia said it would, twice. Now you can call other's out for their bias all day but their isn't a person in the world without one. Judging by posts, that includes you.

That said, it's hard to justify buying a 960 when you have a card that's faster, cheaper, and more future proof in the R9 280x. In addition to that, you can get Free-Sync monitors for much cheaper than G-Sync.

But you searched the pricing of highest to lowest of just the 960s on a single retailer, if I did the same for the 280x it'd go up to $440. I fairly judge each one and have used both AMD and Nvidia and do not criticize an entire brand for slip ups on individual occurrences. You can't say that the 280x is cheaper, but it is in fact faster. It's a matter of price or performance, and each one has it's advantages evenly. I don't wish to argue about which brand is better, only discuss which gpu is more feasible

I definitely don't want to argue over which brand is better, I just wanna help this guy out. I will say one thing that does make the 280x cheaper and that's used video cards. There are many used 280x's on ebay that can be have for less than $150. The 960 isn't that old, so they are very few used up for sale and those that do go up aren't at a huge discount. For a person trying to save as much money as possible, buying used isn't a bad idea and it saves allot of money.

Hm, the page you linked doesn't seem to be working. 11.2 is quite long for a 270x. If that fits in your case then you should be able to fit a 290, as most of them are 10.9 inches as you stated.
