So i am trying to set up a server that has 2 processors and uses 2 INVIDIA graphics cards as processing power: i have a rough idea of how i will set up the processing but for now i am running into a power issue: I need to have a power supply with 2 8-pin CPU connectors, on top of the PCIe power connectors (2x 6+2-pin, 2x 6-pin).

I have a power supply with Eight 8-pin CPU connectors, so i have experimented with modifying the graphics cards to take +12v in the right terminals and ground to accept the 8-pin CPU connector (read: i soldered a female CPU connector onto the corresponding terminals in the PCIe power supply to make it work), but the graphics card flashes that it isn't being powered sufficiently.

I suspect that the CPU 12v supply operates in a different way than the PCIe +12v so that they are absolutely not compatible, even with a custom wiring, but the internet has yielded no results.

There are power supplies out there that i have come across with the right amount of watts and connectors, but i need the server form factor: 14.17"x 2.99" x 1.57", or close to that. So really what i am asking is:

--is there a power supply that fits the form factor above that has the connectors mentioned above, OR

--can CPU 12v be hard-wired to power a PCIe card without issues?

Do you mean a rackmount server or a re-purposed workstation/tower server? If it's the former, you'll need special connectors/PSU for it to work. Hell, most server power supplies have one connector and it's the motherboard that deals with properly powering everything.

If you mean a workstation with standard ATX, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139083 , http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139082 , or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151109 depending on CPU and GPU power draw (highest if you go with AMD 390(x) equivalents or Fury X equivalents or K80, middle for K40, etc)

I Realize that there are ATX power supplies that meet the power requirements i need, but the server PSU profile is the issue i'm dealing with here. Right now the way i have this working is this: http://imgur.com/ILd7i2N

I need a PSU that fits in like this one (the one with 8 CPU 8-pins and not PCI-e ones): http://imgur.com/lZfYXeu

Thanks so much for your help!

I have never seen a non-standard shaped power supply designed to run gaming cards, the server power supplies are designed to run the specific servers they are made for, and not much else. If you have regular hard drive power leads available, they do make adapters to run video cards off them, although running more than one may cause issues with power draw.

If you need the extra video card power I suggest a workstation system rather than a server (unless said server happens to be in a standard computer case that will run an standard power supply).

You might be able to find a 1U/2U power supply on newegg, but nothing will fit the specifications you want since nobody is crazy enough to do it. Just look for workstation replacements like I said in the first post, you'll find it much easier to deal with.
