But my buddy's grandma passed this morning without a formal will, although they have a reason to believe she started typing a will this morning. It's sudden, and I don't know any of the details yet. Basically, they're looking for a way to "hack" into her computer, but without turning it off, because they're not positive if it was saved or not.

It's on Windows 7, and I'm assuming it would be written in MS Office. They don't know the password, and the hint isn't set.

Asking for help with this is probably considered against the rules, but I know the family would appreciate any help.

Yeah it is against the rules. There is no way to tell if you are telling the truth unfortunately.
The will won't hold up, but if you just want to see what her last wishes might have been then I understand.
Hopefully you get all get along, I have seen these types of situations go bad before.
