If you're gonna pay 970 money you wanna get a 390. Why because it'll outperform a 970 in most games. Save nvidia optimized ones. Thats if you don't plan on overclockin with overclocking i'd still lean towards a 390. But now a 970 could potentially overclock better as it does use less power and thus less heat. But overclocking isn't guaranteed, so pure performance 390. If you're spending 960 money go with a 290. It performs just as well as a 970 or close to in most games and you can get it for around 200 usd. Used or otherwise on ebay.

depends, high to ultra settings at what resolution 720p/1080p/1440p/4k? If you want 4k you're gonna have to look at dual 980 ti's/fury x's/titan x's if you want to push a game and still get close to 60fps. 980's/ 390x if you want 1440p at high ultra. 1080p i'd look at 970/390/290 at about high maybe ultra settings in some games.
