Solution
i would've said its probably because rage is really badly coded like most bethesda games lol... but if its happening on other games to when it shouldn't be massively straining the card then i would look to do 2 things to start with.

1. get something to monitor and control fan speeds with on the gpu. the ati driver may not be running the fan at a sufficient speed. try getting msi afterburner. its based on riva tuner and will work with most graphics cards. its lets you set what speeds the fan goes at what temperatures. if you need help with the settings then just ask :) i use this program and its great!

2. if this doesn't help much and you still think something is up i would try uninstalling and completely removing the graphics driver...
what has been changed with your computer in that time? had you played any games that pushed the graphics card before rage, and did it get hot then? not that i really think rage will be pushing your card much...

I dont know what temp it gets to but my screen freezes, i touched the heat sink and it almost burnt my finger.
my card is a
Asus ATI AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB DDR5.

I played crysis 2 max and it was fine. Ever since i got Rage and dloaded the newest driver 11-9 iv had problems. Even on Starcraft2 it starts overheating.

good luck and do post back with your findings! :)

Solution

i always rated gpu-z as a good app but i really think ive been getting some dodgey gpu readings with it lately. ive got a couple threads running about it on here...

yeh i get roughly the same temp readings with any program ive used to be honest. its just that gpu-z has these 3 extra readings for gpu temps and one of them called "MEMIO" said 104.5c when i was gaming. i really didn't know whether to believe it, on top of that gpu-z has been telling me that the max load of my second card in crossfire was 14% while gaming. amd system monitor says both cards were being used in the high 90's (%). its only now that ive felt i dont quite trust gpu-z, could just be something about my specific setup though!

no worries. post back if you need any more help 😉
