As for "HD" videos those are played two ways:

a) CPU (software) must be powerful enough.

b) Hardware (GPU acceleration) offloads from CPU.

It's been quite a number of years since a computer couldn't handle HD graphics. My advice is simply install the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack using the default settings, or enable H.264, VC1 and MPEG2 if videos stutter.

*I don't know what your GPU supports in terms of hardware acceleration of videos.
