Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 8700 desktop with the following specs:

Processor: 4th generation intel core i7- 4790 processor 8M cache, 4.00GHZ
Graphic Card: AMD Radeon R9 270 2GB GDDR5
PSU: 460 W
Motherboard PCI Interface: PCI x 16, single width, full length
RAM: 16GB Dual channel DDR3 16000MHZ
BIOS Version: A13

I want to upgrade the graphic card and get the MSI GeForce GTX 1050 2GT OCV1 2GB GDDR5 128-bit PCI-e 3.0 x16 Graphics Card - 912-V809-2634 . I'm not a gamer. I use it for work and use some programs like adobe photoshop and illustrator. Beside the basic surfing and watching movies online.

My question is it compatible with my system, because i've heard the XPS 8700 has issues when it comes to upgrading graphic card. Thanks in advance.

R9 270 is approximately equal to GTX 1050TI (you said you want GTX 1050), so what you want to do is to downgrade, why?
If you are not a gamer, you have more than enough already?

If you need more power for Photoshop, GTX 1060 will easy work with your PSU, heck, Dell installed GTX 1070 with that PSU in some XPS models.

It's because the R9 270 isn't working , card is dead, fans not spinning, black screen after boot up, so i want to get another card which gives me good performance and at the same time not expensive. I am between

MSI GeForce GTX 1050 2GT OCV1 2GB GDDR5 or
MSI GeForce GTX 1050 ti 4GT OCV1 GDDR5

I am concerned about the compatibility issue since i read that XPS 8700 has issues with upgrading or changing graphic card.

I got it, you did not said that R9 was dead.

GTX 1050TI then. Your BIOS is OK https://www.dell.com/community/Desktops-General-Read-Only/Upgrading-Dell-XPS-8700-with-EVGA-Geforce-GTX-1050-Ti-Sc/td-p/5123871
So choose any you like https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%20601273503&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=RATING&PageSize=36

All of those will fit. My personal preference is EVGA, MSI and Asus, then the rest.

What else do you need, hm.

First you need t connect your monitor to XPS onboard video.

You need to connect to onboard Intel HD 8 HDMI or 9 Display Port out ports, so you can prepare your PC for GTX 1050TI.

Next go to NVIDIA site and get latest driver package https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-in
since you did not idenfied your Windows version. Select Geforce-Geforce 10 series-Geforce 1050TI-your Windows version and click Search. Download the installer.

You need to remove completely AMD drivers. To do this you will need DDU https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html
Install it first. Second, boot into Safe Mode. To do so easy way, open RUN dialog from Start, type msconfig, enter, select second BOOT TAB, and select Safe Mode minimal, Apply and OK, Restart - PC boots into Safe Mode.
Run DDU and select there everything with AMD video, since you have Intel CPU, you can basically select all AMD containing entries and remove them. Do this at least twice.
Next select RUN again and do msconfig, Unselect Safe Boot, Apply and reboot.

Physically install your GTX 1050TI, you don't have to connect any wires to this card (check the card around and if you see no connector receptacle around upper corner you good, if you see one, your power supply has additional video card connector), attach monitor to the card, boot PC and install Geforce Driver package (when getting this from NVIDIA, get the largest file - full package, not just a driver).

This is it.

If you have any questions during installation, please post it here, I will help.

Thank you so much for the detailed answer you wrote me. You've helped me a lot. I had in mind to get either an EVGA or MSI graphic card, i've read good reviews about both cards.

My computer came with pre installed windows 8.1 but i am going to do a clean installation of windows 10, connected to inboard HDMI. I've already taken taken out the amd radeon r9 270 card out of the case. After i install windows 10 i will download the NVIDIA package as you mentioned. Again thank you so much, i very much appreciate your help. Have a good day :)
