Hi there i have just moved home and the computer was working i tested it a few days ago to do my job search i set up my desk today and turned it on went on fine then i drilled my sons tv to the wall in his bedroom i remember smelling something horrible but i thought it was just from the drilling i turned the computer on no display?

I checked all connections reseated card no display? reset bios nothing!

Now at this point i just removed the card altogether (R7 260x 2gb)

And found this thick sticky substance on the PCB side off the card It smells like shower gel!!!!!!

So i cleaned it all off with cotten ear buds and alcahol No display!

The board LED is a steady red meaning no VGA weather the card is in or not :-(

Computer powers up fine no beeps no errors everything looks like its fine as normal but no display

Im guessing the card is toast R7 260x 2gb

I checked the whole computer with my torch there is none off that stucky substance anywhere else am i safe to say its just the card thats toast

Please help am about to order a new better card off amazon as i needed an upgrade anyway just wanted to hear your thoughts

Board is Asus M3A770D3

Thanks

Joe

If shower gel is there, might it also be that water got there too? Try to clean the PCI-E port and the card itself, also use a hair dryer to dry the GPU if there is still any gel/water left. Let's hope the boards are OK :/
Maybe something got poured into the case while you were boxing things for the move which broke your GPU when you tried turning it on? I wouldn't expect such thing to happen from this MOBO or GPU themselves.

Sorry i accidently clicked vote down on my phone and cant change it :-/

Could something else be broken? The graphics card fans spin up can the card be partialy broken where it recieves power but no display i hope the graphics card slot is ok sadly i have no donar card to test it :-(

I guess that sticky substance is the thermal compound which is supposed to be between the GPU's chip and the heatsink/fan. You shouldn't have wiped it off, but its not a big deal, you can replace it. The problem is that, it seems your GPU fan is missing? Is there a heatsink or a fan on your GPU? Has it fallen off while your computer was vibrating in the truck/car during the move?

It is not starting maybe because its overheating and is preventing itself from being melted (Yes, 1 second without a heatsink is capable of making a CPU/GPU chip's temp rise from 30-40C (Room temp) to 100C, and the rise continues over the next seconds.)

The card MUST NOT be naked like the pic below:

Hi sorry if i interpreted it wrong the sticky substance was on the outside off the card on the none fan side quite a fair bit actually it was invisible my guess is that it is shower gel it must have leaked onto the computer in transit!!! :fou:

When i turned it on the other day it was ok as it was only on for a few mins then today when i turned it on i left it running while i was drilling then walked back in the room to no power to the computer at all.

I have just opened the card and i cant see any internal damage the compound is still there

Off to buy the cheapest graphics card off ebay to test the board is ok should bd handy for breadboarding in the future

Very annoyed with myself sigh
