Graphics card causing hard drive error?

Hello!

I am trying to install an asus r9 270x graphics card, but when I try to boot up, I get "a bootable device not been detected" error - my hard drive isn't detected in the BIOS. When I switch back to my old graphics card, my pc boots to Windows as normal, so the problem is definitely being caused by the new graphics card.

I have a 750W PSU so I don't -think- it's a problem of not having enough power.

I have:

Motherboard: Intel DP55WB
Processor: Intel i5 750 Quad 2.66GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
HDD: 1TB
PSU: Winpower atx-750 (I have also tried with a corsair CX500 - same problem)

I thought maybe because the new card is physically much bigger than my old one, it might be knocking a connection somewhere I didn't see, but the SATA cable seems fine and I'm not sure what else to look at.

I would be grateful for suggestions, I'm out of ideas (not that I have many to begin with!)

Try this. I came across it while researching your problem.

As per troubleshooting steps, please try this:

Clear the CMOS by removing all components from the board (power supply, battery, hdds) for about 20-30 minutes and then reconnect them again.

or just pull the power plug and the cmos battery if you have one

Hi, thanks for the replies. I tried unplugging power supply and CMOS battery - no difference. My previous card was a Radeon HD5770 (by powercolor - not sure of other details).

I also tried checking the boot order (someone else had posted this as a solution when they had this problem), but it's set to go to my hard drive first, so I don't think that's the problem.

Looks like I only have one PCI-e slot unfortunately, so I can't check that.

This is very strange. Is it possible that when you're installing the new GPU you're hitting something?

There should be no reason a PCI-E card affects your SATA ports.

I could see accidentally disconnecting the SATA cable from the motherboard side, or maybe the new GPU hits the cable and loosens the HDD's sata side...?

I don't think so - I've tried a different SATA cable and attaching it to a different port on the motherboard which is well away from the graphics card - the card isn't touching the cable at all (this setup works fine with my old card) but still the same problem. It doesn't look like it's hitting anything else that I can see. So confusing!

Thanks for taking the time to help - I will send an email to the shop and see if they will send me another one. Would like to test it out in someone else's computer first but I don't think I know anyone else who has a desktop any more!

Turns out I needed to upgrade my BIOS - it now boots with the new card and finds windows - I can hear it boot up in the background, but unfortunately I just get an error of "0_" on the screen.

Looks like the same problem as here:

Hopefully one of those solutions will work for me (and hopefully not the "buy a new motherboard one" because that's a bit above my skill level I think!)

Edited to ask - how can I find out if a card is compatible with my motherboard? I did a search and found a few websites that said this combo was ok, but obviously not. I can't seem to find anything, but I might not be searching right. This person:

had the same problem I now have with a Diamond r9 270x but fixed it with a Sapphire r9 270x. I really didn't know there was such a difference :/ I can maybe return it and get a different one but I'm not sure now how to know which to get.

So I exchanged my Asus for a Sapphire r9 270x - installed first time with no problems. Hope this helps anyone else with my weird, highly specific problem!
