I have a invidia gtx 970 sc connected to my monitor by the hdmi port on the back of the graphics card. Next to the hdmi port there is a display port that ive tried connecting to my tv. Is it even possible to have the hdmi and display port used at the same time or possible to switch between them while both are connected into the graphics card? Would be greatly appreciated for the help!

Yes you can use both at the same time. In fact if I'm not mistaken you can use 3 (if not 4) GPU display outputs at the same time. You can use the Nvidia control panel (or the windows display resolution option from the control panel) and decide whether you want to mirror the same image between the displays or extend the desktop and having each display showing a part of the desktop.

Finally you said that you want to connect your TV with a display port cable. Are you sure that your TV has one available? Because most TVs don't come with displayport ports, they only have HDMI. Good luck.
