graphics card displaying white lines

my friend recently let his roommate borrow his pc when he got it back white lines would be displayed upon startup then it would become checkered black and white the graphics card is a msi gtx 970 4gb

Hello... Typically transporting a PC will cause connection problems... try re-moving and re-seating the GPU, and look/check your other connections in the Computer.
