The above is correct. My advice would be an R9-280X which is about $300 if you have the budget:

or alternatively an NVidia GTX770 if the NVidia features seem important: PhysX, TXAA, G-Sync, Shadowplay (recording). I think the ASUS GTX770 is an awesome card, though I'm wondering at what point more than 2GB at this performance level will be "needed" (next year, two years or never?). Thus, I'm a little torn on what to recommend, the AMD with 3GB or the NVidia with 2GB?

There's no wrong answer really. It depends on your usage.

Use THIS as a guide and get at least 2GB of video memory on the card. The best value will be cost divided by performance...

In order of performance:

R7-260X ($120): http://pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-1003662l

GTX750Ti ($150): http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-gtx750tioc2gd5 (The ASUS model can be overclocked more)

(The GTX750Ti is similar to an HD7850, though the ASUS version once overclocked is almost identical to the GTX650Ti)

R9-270X ($190): http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-r9270xgaming2g

R9-280X ($300): http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-r9280xdc2t3gd5

GTX770 ($300): http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-gtx770dc2oc2gd5

R9-290 ($380): http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvr929oc4gd

**You will need to verify the VALUE of the card, as well as ensure that it appears of good quality which you can ascertain by reviews and customer feedback at pcpartpicker, Amazon etc. If in doubt, ASUS makes very excellent cards.

I've found the GTX770 performance sufficient to run MAX or close to maximum quality on every game. Even in Crysis 3 which can drop below 20FPS (if everything maxed), the game looks awesome at 60FPS if you carefully tweak it. Not that different to my eyes.

If QUALITY is important and the games are modern spend more but I see little point in going beyond an R9-290 which is roughly $400.
