I've been trying to search before posting however my uni has multiple threads blocked under "pornography"... This says so much about where I'm studying!

I'm looking to either upgrade or crossfire my GPU and would like some advice about what's the better option. I've been recommended the 390X but thought I'd ask about other options as I just read a thread about it overheating.

Am I right in thinking that I'd have to get the same GPU to crossfire so would have to get rid of the current card if I bought a better one?

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth z87
CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K 3.40 GHz
CPU cooler: Corsair H100 Water Cooler
Graphic card: AMD Radeon HD 7970
RAM: 16GB Corsair 2133 Mhz Vengeance Pro DDR3
Hard Drive: 250GB Kingston SSD, 500GB Samsung SSD, WD MyCloud 4TB
PSU: Corsair AX860i
Case: Cooler Master Styker

That's a difficult comparison, but I think the 390x would be better based on some inferences from what I can find.

So here is how the 390 (non-X version, which is slightly slower) performs on Battlefield 3 at 1920x1200 - about 90 fps

Here is a video showing how the 390 performs in Battlefield 3 at 1920x1080 - over 100 fps.

It's not very scientific, but the comparisons are close enough.

A slightly slower card (390) runs similar to your contemplated CF setup, suggesting that the 390x would be faster. Plus it has more VRAM, and there's no need to fiddle with CF, which can be annoying. The rest of your system is good, and I think you'll run the 390x well.

I think crossfire is off the table after trying out some newer games last night. I tried the newest GTA and it was ridiculously loud. The temperature sat at a pretty good 71c but I think the noise would put me off while gaming and working.
