i have recently purchased a computer for gaming. its nothing special but its a start i think. i purchased a tower with ;
amd cpu 4-core fx4300,
asus m5a78l-m am3+motherboard,
4gb ddr3 memory pc3-10600,
1tb sata3 6.0gb/s hard drive

i have another pc with a MSI GeForce 8600 GTS Directx 10
NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC graphics card and was wondering if it would be compatible with my pc and if it would help me be able to play high resolution games. Is it worth the effort? budget is a factor here... wife wasnt happy i spent 600 on that pc i described above. im new to building pc.

on a side note. did i buy an ok computer? the reason i bought it is to play games. such as diablo or starcraft 2, star citizen when it finally comes out..

Those specs are hardly worth $300. Although I can find an i5 pc for $150 which would be better performance. Whoever you bought it from ripped you off seriously. Return the pc if you can.

The 8600gts is 10 years old, was not high end then so is near the bottom in today's standards. While it'll play diablo and starcraft 2, star citizen will not be playable. That is much more demanding than those older games.

Welcome to Tom's!
Did yo buy this PC new, or used? $600 seems a little pricey for relatively old technology. The 8600GTS is getting a bit long in the tooth for playing newer games.

"diablo or starcraft 2, star citizen"

One of these is not like the others, lol. I think the 8600 GTS is past being useful, unless you mean Diablo 1. The amount of vram on the card will be part of what determines how high a resolution you can run. The game settings will also place demands on memory. 1080p vs 720p takes more memory, high settings vs low settings takes more memory.

It's better than nothing I guess, if it doesn't do the job then you need to wait till you can buy something better. Not knowing what your power supply capabilities are, a used AMD HD 7750 DDR5 card might do the trick for cheap.

Star Citizen, assuming it's ever done, will require a much better videocard. You'll want a 2gb vram more modern card at least for that game.

I really messed up. I went to a Pc repair shop today, told the owner of the store my entire story, he also recommends I return the pc. He knows the guy that sold it to me and had nothing nice to say. The place i bought the pc from was PC Service Depot Sarnia just an fyi/warning for you all.

I know little when it comes to computers inner workings. Im not able to build or know anyone to build a Pc for me. If I return the pc... Keeping the cost as low as possible what would you recommend I buy for;
a motherboard?
a processor... i5?
how many gb of ram... 16?
hard drive.... 1 tb?

I will want to be able to play Star Citizen when its released. The Pc doesnt need to be Star citizen ready immediately. Thanks for all your responses.

No problem dude, good luck with the return.

That pc repair shop you went to should be happy to do a build for a small-ish fee if we select the parts, but if you're set on buying a prebuilt we can help you with that too :)

Try and get your money back and take it from there
