Building a new system around the i5 4690 and I'm just wondering what graphics would be best to pair with it? I'm looking mostly at NVIDIA cards. I'll not be running a lot of demanding games, just games like Far Cry, League of Legends and Football Manager really. I originally had the GTX 970 but I'm thinking this is extreme overkill for what I want to play, so any help would be appreciated. :)

Solution
At lower price points than the gtx 970, amd wins in price to performance. I say go with the r9 280x. If you must go with nvidia the gtx 960 works. Both are very capable 1080p cards. The 280x beats the 960 in performance.

10$ cheaper than any 960 I found. (After rebate)

Hey !

If you think a 970 is overkill then consider moving down to a GTX 960 or an AMD 290, personally I would go for the GTX 970 because it will mean your PC is future proof for a while and you won't need to upgrade soon.

Yeh it is overkill if you're just playing those games, great for triple A games though like GTA V. If you're really not going to be playing any games like that then I would recommend a 750 ti or a 660.

Really don't want to go with AMD (that sounds so fanboyish, but just really like the NVIDIA cards i've had with my laptops) would the 960 compliment the 4690 well? this is my first PC build, so just want to make sure everything would be fine.

It is fanboyish and how nvidia can consistently charge more than amd for the same or less performance. I am an AMD fanboy because of company policies like using open standards. I do however know nvidia makes good products.

The 960 shits on 1080p gaming, but some worry about it's 2gb frame buffer when it comes to future titles @ 1080p. Right now the 2gb isn't that big of a deal.

I'm part of the NVIDIA master race don't worry :p and the 4690 should be more than powerful enough for a 960 !

Yeah, each to their own I guess! think I'm just going to go with the 960 then as it seems to meet my needs. Is there any different at all between the EVGA, MSI and ASUS versions? always seems to confuse me.

Admit it NVIDIA has better performance but i agree the pricing is a bit steep.

PCPartPicker.com price list with least being @ $142.99

Why I recommend this card?

Because you're not going to run a lot of demanding games. So no point in investing the money on GTX 960 ($198.99) or R9 270x ($198.99) or R9 280x ($300).

Save the money, invest on a good PSU and may be get a AMD R9 370x or R9 380 card as a GPU upgrade in future.

Did you not read what OP said at the beginning? It would be a waste of money to but a 960 or 280x if he's going to play games that aren't that graphically demanding. The 750ti is more than enough for his needs.

750Ti averages 44fps on medium settings in far cry 4@1080p . I don't find this acceptable personally, maybe that is just me. A r9 270x averages 72fps on the same test. I think aiming for at least 60fps on medium-high settings to be a better target. As far as LoL, almost anything can play that game.

To me the gtx 960 or r9 280x hit a sweet spot for performance at 1080p, this is ofcourse my opinion. I like to get 60fps on high-ultra settings, or be able to turn things down and drive 100+fps.
