Does anyone know why the price of gpus has gone up. I was looking at some graphics cards for a friend who is going to build a computer and they were realities low(around 500). Now they've shot up to the ball park of $1000, did i miss something big that happened with nvidia or is it just a market change.

I think it's due to a shortage of cards and/or the mining craze. For a new build, depending on budget, I'd go with the parts your originally wanted then get a budget GPU like the 1050 ti for now as it's good enough for gaming until card prices come back down.

1. Shortage of RAM supply.. that has steadily increase price.
2. Ethereum mining has got stupidly profitable and even cards as low as 750TI's are marked up because of it.
