I just put together a brand new computer and I am not receiving a display when I connect my monitor to the graphics card. I do however still receive a display when I connect my monitor to the onboard graphics card - even with the new graphics card still in the PCIE-2 Slot. My BIOS is set to use the PCIE-2 slot as the "primary graphics adapter".

The graphics card is receiving power (has both an 8 and a 6 pin power input (what would happen if I plugged in all 10?), and the lights come on with spinning fans.

Looking at the motherboard's system browser, everything is detected with the exception of the graphics card in the PCIE-2 slot, which still shows as "empty", but... if I attempt to boot my computer without attaching the graphics card to the Power Supply I receive an error upon booting the computer that says "please power down the computer and connect this graphics card to a power source", or something to that effect.

I'm a bit confused, I don't think the PCIE-2 slot is broken because it can tell if there is a graphics card in the computer that is not receiving power. But, when it is receiving power, the motherboard doesn't "see" it.

I use a DVI cable, with an adapter on the gpu, but I have also tried to use an HDMI cable.

I've download the most recent BIOS for this board (P1.90), as well as any other drivers/software either provided by the CD that came with the hardware as well as what was available from the F-Stream utility program. When I scan for new drivers, nothing new shows up.

Unfortunately I don't have access to a different graphics card to see if it really is an issue with the motherboard.

The only thing I can think of, is maybe I was a little overzealous when putting my new computer together? I put the computer together and put the drivers for the graphics card on my computer before installing the motherboard drivers or the actual graphics card... don't know if that would cause an issue or not, or how to remove the graphics card drivers if it is causing an issue, they don't show up in the Device Manager for me to delete. The only display adapter that is in my Device Manager is my onboard graphics card that comes with the motherboard.

Here are my specs:

Motherboard - ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Killer
Graphics Card - MSI GTX 970 (GeForce GTX 970) Gaming 4G
CPU - Intel Core i5 - 4690 @ 3.5 GHz
Memory - 8GB (2x4GB) G.Skill DDR3 RAM
Storage - 1TB HDD
Power - Corsair CX600M (600W)

I am really new to building computers and I'm not familiar with all of the terminology yet.

How do I "set bios to initialize the PEG or add in card first"? I didn't see anything in the BIOS that mentioned a PEG, but I'll try taking a quick look now that I know I should be looking for it.

I'm going to be completely honest, I have two cords to attach to my monitor, one is an HDMI cord (recognize that one), but the other is the pretty standard looking cord that usually goes with computer monitors (which I'm pretty sure is called a DVI cord), but I'm not absolutely certain that it's actually called a DVI cord.

Either way, it doesn't fit on the graphics card without the adapter.

You hit the nail on the head, that is exactly what I am using, the first 2 images. I'll try testing the other PCIE slot too to see if the motherboard will acknowledge the card in that spot.

Update: Switching the Graphics card to the other PCIE slot didn't change anything. It still shows up as empty in the system browser. On the plus side, the HDMI cable works on my motherboard's onboard graphics cars :)

Hey OP. Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I have nearly the exact same issue with my new MSI GTX 970. No display to my monitor no matter what I try. But when I put my old GTX 660 Ti in, it works just fine, also onboard graphics works just fine. Leading me to believe it's a defective card. But I havent tried it in another system yet.

update your bios

nice thread necro btw

Connect an extra 6pin connector. I had only 8 pin connected to my card. I guess it wasn't getting enough power. So it's working now. Fuck ya!

Oh I got ya lol. It was this year so I figured maybe it wasn't TOO late.

i wanna revive the thread.
it worked perfectly untill a day ago, now, it wont show dispaly (Asus Gtx 970). other than that, i have NEVER faced any issue during gaming or otherwise.
on board graphics do seem to detect just fine! i will dislodge and remount the card along with the pin to be sure.
lets hope it aint my one year old gtx 970 🙁

Currently having the same issue. Were you able to resolve it?
