Graphics Card not Recognizing Minecraft

I have an MSI Radeon 7870, but because Minecraft has so little graphic intensity, the GPU clock doesn't go up and it sticks around 300MHz and causes the game to lag. Is there a power setting or a way I can get the 7870 to recognize that I'm playing minecraft?

Have you tried switching v-sync off? I was having lag issues with my new 280X and it was just v-sync limiting the frames. I don't know if it is the same issue your describing but maybe give it a try. Sorry if its not the solution.

I've tried turning off vsync, changing control panel power settings, using OpenGL rendering, and I have the latest drivers so I'm not sure how to keep the card at a higher clockspeed during minecraft.

No I have an Athlon 750k which is forced to be over 2600MHz at all times. Is there a way I can set a minimum clock speed for my GPU?

have you tries using the msi overclocking software? I think its called afterburner but that could be something else. You should be able to turn up clock speeds in that. If that doesn't work, there is a way to turn it up in the bios but you would have to google the motherboard to find out how.

I tried afterburner but I wasn't able to set a minimum clock speed. I'll try out the bios idea tomorrow but I think I'm going to have to get a texture pack or shaders to trigger the GPU so its clock speed goes over 300mhz

The bios didn't have anything that would help me. Hopefully I can find a way to lock the GPU on 3d mode so that it can't be in idle state when I play minecraft.

Yes it is in a x16 slot. It is a mini-itx motherboard. The problem at this point is figuring out how to get the GPU to run at a constant clock speed so that it doesn't downclock itself during minecraft. Maybe I should try Sapphire Trixx or HIS iTurbo?

yeah that might work, I honestly have no idea why your graphics card isn't recognising it. Does this happen in any other games? Maybe your graphics card has a fault because it should not be throttling down and letting your game suffer.

I researched it some more and apparently its a common problem with the Radeon HD 7xxx series not recognizing minecraft and sticking in 2d mode. There isn't an easy way to force it into 3d mode so I think I'm out of luck.

Yeah I checked and I do have the latest and the correct version. Do you know a way to force 3d clocks instead of 2d clocks?
