Graphics Card Overheating Issues

I'd been using an 8800GTS in my comp for about 4-5 years. It recently started showing a lot of artifacts and then stopped working altogether. I figured I had it about 5 years, they aren't made to last forever, so I didn't think much of it. I did notice before it went bad, it was getting excessively hot. I know my friend that helped me build the comp had it OCed, so I figured that contributed to it burning out.

Now I'm in the process of selecting new parts for a new build, and a friend let me borrow an old Nvidia 7600 GT just so I could use my comp until I build the new one. The moment I do anything using any kind of graphics, the card will quickly reach 100+ *C. Any one know why this might be?

Not exactly, as the minimum requirements to play games on medium with good framerates are still using Nvidia's 6900.

Could it be a PSU issue, even with the card not hooked up directly to the power supply, and no issue with any other part running hot? I'm about to get a 5770 MSI Hawk and I don't wanna have the same issue when I get it.

What's the psu's power?
If you have a 400-500w then there shouldn't be a problem on that end. The 7600 uses the pci-e slot, and doesn't need a 6 pin connector.
Does the psu have a 6 pin connector?

Yes, the PSU has a 6 pin connector. I believe it's in the 650w range. I'd have to check when I get home to make sure, it's been some time since I bought it.

You bring the fan speed up? Might just be the card itself runs hot because it's old and not running at full efficiency.

7600 doesn't have a fan. I'm hoping when I get the 5770 MSI Hawk, the dual fans will keep it cool.

Atleast I don't recall seeing a fan on it. Might just have a really small one. Would I be able to adjust the fan with MSI Afterburner?

I'll try that once I get home. See if that fixes the problem. Seems odd that it wouldn't automatically be set at a fan speed to keep the card cool upon installing it.

Well, for the update. I got home, fan speed was already at 100. Any other suggestions?

With a small house fan blowing on the 7600, it's running at 84*C
