I think i have a pretty odd set up for powering my graphics card. As shown in the picture, will powering my graphics card with these cables be a problem? The cable that goes off screen is going into my power supply.

I tried researching it, but i cant figure out anyone else using the same set up for cables as me. I don't even really know what cables these are called. I know that two of them are 4 pin molex to 6 pin PCIe, but im not sure what they are being connected to.

My PSU is a mod x stream pro 700w and the graphics card i'm going to use is a r9 270x.

I got the PSU back in 2012 when i really knew nothing about computers. I must have used the adapters thinking that...

You shouldn't be using any adapters. They are pcie express 6pin cables they power the gpu, you should have at least two of those without having to use an adapter. They look like this: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/attachments/pcie6-2-jpg.57637/ can be 6pin or 6+2 pin.

That power supply is pretty bad I would recomend you replace it with something of higher quality if you can: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2008/11/12/ocz_700w_modxstream_pro_power_supply/9#.VkIGqfmrSUk

well, generally it's not considered a good idea to use the adapters for your gpu. i'll tell you why, you can decide if the reasons are good enough to go out and replace your PSU.

1) generally speaking if your psu doesn't have the proper power cords/plugs for your gpu, it can't produce the power needed for that gpu
2) the quality of the power through adapters like that tends to be poor, and not good enough for properly powering your gpu
3) every new parts is a new point of failure in your system
4) even if your psu is strong enough to power your gpu, if it lacks 2 6 pin plugs, then it probably it way too old and needs to be replaced anyway.

I got that power supply back in 2012. I guess its time for a new one.

Would you think this is a good enough power supply? I'm asking because this one is available at my store and i'm really desperate to play fallout 4 today, haha.

Older psu's using molex adapters for later generation PCIe cards are usually acceptable for 1 6pin but maybe not two, depending on the watts/amps provided by the PSU, you would want to make sure that single lead comes from an outage of at least 27A on a 500w PSU.

I searched mod x stream pro 700w and the search gave me this at Newegg:

I'll give you the benefit of doubt your psu is different but if this is your psu, why aren't you using the PCIe supplementary connectors provided?

I got the PSU back in 2012 when i really knew nothing about computers. I must have used the adapters thinking that is what i was supposed to use and then now the right cables are lost. Instead of risking it i will just pick up a new PSU today. This one has been used alot already so i think its time for a new one anyway.

Not a very good psu and everything else best buy has is either too expensive or crap. You dont have a fry's electronics or a microcenter near you? If your on the east coast of the US you probably don't. I would use the psu you have now, it should have all the required cables to power your gpu its just kinda crappy. Then order a decent power supply online like this if yOu want something cheap but good: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-xfxts550w

this should not work. the molex to 6 pin adapters are an emergency solution at best, and you definitely should not run both off the same cord. that power supply has modular cables you can connect to it, correct?

what you want are the pci-e cables. you should have 1 with a 6pin like you see there, and one with a 6+2pin. a 6+2 looks like an 8 pin where one pair isnt actually attached so you can bend it out of the way and only use it as a 6 pin. these 2 should plug in to the red plugs on the power supply body itself, and then in to the graphics card.

without knowing exactly what card you're using, i cant say exactly how it will be, but you will likely be using the both of those cables. they should have been included with the power supply, so check where you have your extra cables.
