Graphics Card Reduced Performance

So I bought a Msi Gtx 670 2g oc in mid 2012 and it used to be able to play all of my games at max settings but now even when I go back to old games that it could run just fine they have spikes of reduced frame rates (this occurs when there are a lot of particles and physx). I only noticed this recently when I was playing Metro 2033 and my computer was struggling to keep a constant frame rate when around explosions...from a game released in 2010, yet just last year I could play bf3 ultra 64 players at about 80-120ish fps.

Just in the past few days I have been replaying mirrors edge and when ever a bunch of glass is broken my game the frame rate drops drastically, whereas it never used to do this. What could be the cause for this? Is it something to do with the drivers and/or physx? Or is it a hardware fault?

My current driver version is 331.58

Solution
Well if it's just games with Physx, I would try uninstalling the drivers. Download DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) and install it. Reboot into Safe Mode and run DDU and completely remove the nVidia drivers and Physx. There are three check boxes, I would also select Remove C:\AMD and or C:\NVIDIA folders. This should get rid of all traces of your driver. Reboot into normal mode and install the latest nVidia driver. On reboot go into the nVidia Control Panel and make sure that GPU is selected for Physx and then test with a game.

Thanks for the response, it was set to cpu, but unfortunately switching it did not seem to fix the problem. Any other ideas?

The issue is not with metro or any game in particular, it persists on other games such as mirrors edge. I would prefer not to just disable physx (disabling it does fix the problem), but to find a proper solution. Any other ideas?
