What would be the best graphics card that can max out (nearly) any game at 1080p while getting at least 60fps, while not being overkill and a waste of money?

E.g a GTX 780 would be overkill for 1080p gaming, and money spent on that could have been put elsewhere in the build.

Solution
So to answer your question. An r9285 or 280x will be fine for 1080p without breaking the bank. There are good deals on these cards on newegg.

If u want nvidia go for a 770. Prolly more expensive but with all the holiday sales and price slashing you could get lucky.

970 is a great price/ performance card but im guessing 350 Bucks is outta your budget. And dont believe all the hype about AA. It will only make things harder.

Hi there,

First of all GTX 780 is not an overkill in 1080p. Most GPU intensive games like Metro, Crysis 3, Far Cry 3 would show you exactly about 60 fps at maxed out settings and those games are not new now. So newere games could be even more GPU hungry since lots of them a "wracked" ports from consoles with minimal optimization for pc.

The other thing is that there is no need in 780 no more because there is GTX 970 on the market. Best card for the price for high-end gaming.

I have the same question as the OP. I have a Sandy Bridge quad core i5, with 8 GB RAM, and a 1080p monitor, and it seems like getting a GTX 970 GPU would be a waste. What card is ideal for high(not necessarily ultra) details 1080p gaming?

Thats not a waste for real. You would deal fine with the all most GPU intensive games which will come in near future. For the price it's a deal breaker. Also you can upgrade your monitor some time later when 4k monitor become cheaper.

If you still think that this is a waste go with R9 280X/GTX 770. Both are good cards for 1080p gaming. I've tested both ot them and they are fine (GTX 770 better). And dont forget that those 2 cards would NOT give you constant 60 fps at any modern game (ultra settings). Be ready!

Have a nice day

GTX 970 is not an overkill (best price to performance ratio).Aslo it is almost as good as the 780(better in some games)

gtx970 sli, because Ryse will make a single gtx970 cry with 2x2 SMAA, and you have to be elaborate on what you meant by "at least 60fps"

is that on average? at minimum? and the other folks are correct, a 780 is no way overkill. that's like believing my 280x is enough for 1080p gaming when in reality it never was and it never will.

What does the rest of your build look like? I had a 780ti, and could max both of those games out...with top AA. Maybe there is a bottleneck somewhere else?

buy ryse or nba 2k15. set SSAA on 2x2 on ryse, set SSAA on 2k15 to 5, see the 780ti cry.

Youre full of it, with SSAA 8x (Highest, most intense AA setting) Metro renders at 8 times your current resolution and downsamples it to your active res. There isnt a card or SLI/XFire setup even capable of that unless your running tri or quad 780s/780tis/ or dual 295x

From Hard OCP "Right now, unless you are running an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 or GTX TITAN, you will not be able to play above 2X SSAA at 1080p. To run any higher level of SSAA at 1080p or higher, you will need a SLI or CrossFire setup." Granted that quote is a bit old its still shows what power you need.

There was a benchmark showing FPS at different SSAA levele but I cant seem to find it.

answer their damn question not spew your tech boner into peoples mouths. yes 970 is overkill for 1080p the visual diference of 16x AA and 4x is completely negligible at 1080p
and i run metro last light at 1080p 2xAA with medium settings and it looks smooth with 45-55 frames through 95% with a low-mid range 2013 card so if nvidia and AMD cant even keep up with 1080p why try to squeze your wallets

and mate a 770 of any sort its reliable and power efficient would easily set up your 1080p gaming with both appreciable settings and future proofing. it is overkill if you pay 100$ more just to get the AA one more level

Wow.. some people on this thread are incredibly incredibly... I've got the stock nVidia 780ti and can max out Ryse at 1080p and 60fps no problem. Nick can't even answer a simple stupid question about his rig because some pc gamers are too ignorant to know that a gpu isn't the only thing that matters.

Yes... a 780ti is overkill for sure. I have one. Nick is just spreading rumors because he's got major bottleneck issues, he must not know about pc hardware very well because he is blaming the card. He should just look up benchmarks.

Here's what I'm running:
AMD 3.7ghz 8-core CPU OC'd to 4.2ghz, 16gb Corsair DDR3 System Ram, NVidia 780ti, 2tb HDD, Windows 8.1 OS, Bose Surround Sound 5.1

And yes.. I even got a video on youtube to back it up. Can we post youtube links here? My guess is not.

I really doubt im bottlenecking with a 4670k @ 4.7Ghz, 16gb 1866 DDR3.

If you actually took the time to look at benches with even beefier systems running a 780ti youd see that they get close to the same numbers I do.
I think the majority of the people in this thread are the ignorant ones because they dont seem to understand the difference between maxed and ultra, you included.

Ryse benches: http://www.overclock.net/t/1517881/pcgh-ryse-son-of-rome-benchmarks

a 780ti running ryse @ 1080p Max details with 2x SSAA (in otherwards Maxed out) is pushing ~20fps

A gTX 970 is NOT overkill. I just switched from sapphire r9 290 to a evga gtx 970 3 days ago. Witcher 3 at 1080p everything maxed except shadows is on high, foliage density is medium and I'm getting 55 to 60 fps constantly. If I turned everything up I get 45 to 55. It's early 2015. By the end of this year I'm sure there will be games that at more demanding for my gpu. So the answer is definitely NO. A gtx 970 is not overkill for 1080p gaming. And it's only 350 bucks.

The 960 4Gb is a waste of money.
That card only has the power to use 2 GB of memory. That's why Nvidia equipped it with that amount.
You can get a 2Gb 960 for $190. The 4GB model is $220.
That's getting too close to the a $285 GTX 970 to bother with IMO.
It's the same reason a 290x 4Gb and a 290x 8 GB perform the same in a single card setup.
All prices quoted are available on Newegg.

No the 4gb version is 239.99 on newegg ..an if your playing GTA V most of memory is being used. paul from newegg clearly proved that .now with that said I just wonder having this card in SLI would be better

That's a different brand than the one I linked. It's not hard, just click the link I posted above and it will take you straight to it. There is more than one 960 4GB available.
