Looking to get a card that can max out most, if not all games at 1080p.
I'm scared that i may get a card that would be overkill for the system i'm planning to buy.

The most demanding games that I play are pretty much just GTA V and Overwatch (especially Overwatch i would love to play it at Epic settings 60fps with a bit of headroom in fps)

Going to be pairing it with an i5 6600K.
Thanks in advance!

This is kind of a strange question, as you should consider your budget. You will want to buy the best card that your budget will allow. Every game is different, and as some have pointed out even a 1080 wont max out every single game with the highest settings all the time. Currently overall, the Rx 480, and 1060 are geared towards 1080p. The 1070 is geared towards 1440p, and the 1080 is 1440p, and 4K. If you only want to run 1080p on current games, then get a 480, or 1060. If you want to run maxed out games next year as well, then a 1070 might be the better option.
Apparently Overwatch has a headroom feature that goes 10+hz of your monitor (70 FPS if your monitor is 1080P/60hz) so if you want the highest settings for that game the GTX 1060 6gb (with aftermarket cooling/factory OCed) should be plenty for it.

GTA V performs well @Very High/MSAA off.

As stated, I want everything to run on max settings, no feature being turned off etc unless it literally is useless then I would turn it off.

I will be using a 60hz monitor, not a 144hz monitor so in all honesty the 1070 gtx is out of the question..
1. It's known to be an overkill at 1080p.
2. I'll be using a 60hz monitor.

I've been told the 1060's can max out any game at 1080p but I just want to make sure I'm getting the best performance with good value.

I've actually thought about buying a 1060; it'll definitely do the job even if you were going 1440p.

If you can pay for it, get a 1070. Why buy the specs for only today when you will have the system for several years, unless you have a budget issue.

Sure a 1060 will run games great at 1080 now. What happens in 2 years when Crysis 4 or something comes out and you really really want to play that?

It's the same scenario I give to people that look for laptops that will barely run games now, you are keeping the system for a few years, may as well spend a bit more now than a lot more later to fully replace something. You aim where the target will be not where it's at now.

I don't like games like Crysis so i'm fine..

I don't have a problem with the 1070 but just saying that if i'm only going to be playing at 1080p then it's gonna be a waste especially on a 60hz monitor.. I mean i can stretch my budget but I honestly don't see the reason as to why i should as I don't play graphic demanding games like Crysis etc.

I'm just sayin', I have no problem going for a 3k computer (2.2k is like my max budget) but I don't play games like Crysis etc. I'm a casual gamer who just wants to play his games at the max settings with 60fps minimum at 1080p.

I mean, I could get a 144hz monitor, but if i'm gonna go for a 144hz monitor then I'd want to make a build that'll max out 1440p gaming with 60 fps minimum, I'm the type of guy that wants to max out any game that I throw at that i play.. And to max out 1440p with 60 fps minimum, that's gonna cost me more than an arm and a leg, so I want to stay with 1080p. The games I play are perfectly fit for 1080p.. My only problem is figuring out what graphics card can MAX out any game with 60 fps minimum.

I figured..
I looked at 1440p monitors, the cheapest 1440p for me (since im australian) is like $350.. with a 60hz refresh rate.

is that even worth it?

GTA V is pretty graphically demanding. Get the 1060, you won't regret it.

Now that I think about it.. if i go for a 144hz 1080p monitor I have a feeling that the 1070 wouldn't be as MUCH as a waste but I've been looking at 1440p monitors, the response time on majority of the 'cheap' ones aren't good but I reckon I'll just go with a 144hz 1080p monitor.

Yeah. In my opinion anything higher than 1080p is overkill. I honestly can't tell that much of a difference between 1080p and 4K in certain situations. But the difference in 60Hz and 144Hz is astronomically different, so your best bet in my opinion is a 1080p 144Hz monitor.

I recommend the ASUS VG248 if you're going budget. It's $250 for a very very nice monitor.

Had a look at the monitor you suggested, not a fan of the piano black finish so i opted for something different.. $20 cheaper and has a sick matte finish and also 1ms response.

I may as well show everyone my build. *P.S* I already own an SSD, it's not listed there.

the only cpu-heavy game that I can think of and play is CS:GO.. and the CPU i have has no problem maxing it out, plus i may even overclock it but I heard a few things about overclocking reducing the lifespan of the cpu etc.

Well, the GTX 1070 is WAY overkill for GS:GO. That game is only about the CPU, and that game is not at all CPU heavy, unless you count the desire for 300 FPS to be CPU heavy.

See that's the thing, If i go for a 1070 GTX for 1080p and especially for the games i play, it's overkill.
If i go for a 1060 GTX, i'm told that i should spend extra money and just go for a 1070 when my only plan is to play at 1080p maxed settings at 60fps minimum.

Rocket League - CS:GO - Overwatch - ARK: Survival Evolved - League of Legends - GTA V
I'm gonna start playing the Assassins Creed Series, finish each game one by one.
Planning to buy Battlefield 1 as well.

I've been told that ARK and Overwatch can be handled perfectly on the 1060 for 1080p.
Not that I will be playing EVERY single title known to man, I just want comfort knowing that my computer can run things at maxed settings for the games i play and may play (I usually like playing games with really good plots, as i stated AC before hand).

If you won't be playing more demanding games, you don't need an i5-6600K either. That's pretty much the top tier in a gaming CPU, meant for overclocking. Those that pick that CPU also would be looking at a fast video card to pair it with. If you are happy with a high-mid card, then you can go down a tier or two in CPU also. And you said "a card that will max out any game at 1080p" in your post title, which is what I based a 1070 on.
