Graphics card to speed video conversion

Hi - my first post here. :)

I do a lot of video conversion to move things between my various devices, and my video converter software can speed this process 6x if I use a CUDA graphics cards (by using its processor rather than relying solely on the PC's). Please can you tell me at what point I would be going into overkill for this specific task. I don't do any gaming I do lots of Photoshopping as a graphic designer. I was thinking the Geforce GT 640 but am prepared to spend more than that. Any suggestions gratefully received. TIA.

Win7 HP x64
Intel i7 920 2.67
4GB RAM
Monitor 24" Samsung SyncMaster 2494HS
Current card: Radeon 4800

i am not sure when it comes to a lower end quado card like the 600, that the price difference between that and the same GPU that is in the GT430 some GT440s, GT530, GT 620 and some GT 630s; they all have the GF 108 GPU and 96 cuda cores, is really worth it.

the difference is the quado has better, "professional", drivers but, are clocked slower. in other words you are paying for "quality assurance". the higher end quadros are better with their GPUs and clock speeds but at a much higher cost.

BUT as i look around on AU sites . .seems you don't have the luxury of many choices. i am still wondering if you wouldn't be better served spending a little less money and getting a 550ti, which...

As monu said - these are optimised for your type of work....especially if you are earning/supplementing a living from it. Both NVIDIA and ATI offer cards for this specific purpose, thought I personally would chose NVIDIA due to its much more widely accepted and supported CUDA support.

Of course, NVIDIA's gaming cards are cheaper but will also help though to a lesser extent (stay away from the 600 series - cuda not fully implemented here)

HEY IF YOU WANT A GOOD VIDEO CONVERTER GFX CARD GET A CARD WHICH IS HEAVY ON SHADERS LIKE A OLDER GTX 470/480 OR HD 5850/HD5870 ETC
BUT GIVE PREFERENCE TO NVIDIA BCOZ OF CUDA
BUT OTHER WISE AMD ALSO SUPPORTS VIDEO CONVERSION THROUGH AVIVO


EDIT- I ALSO SUGGEST YOU OVERCLOCK/UPGRADE YOUR CPU

upgrade an Intel i7 920? to what? overclock? why?

the cost of upgrading from that platform will be of little to no benefit. plus since the OP is offloading the encoding process to a graphics card; makes it a moot point then.

I actually still use an i7 920 X58 based system, overclocked to 4GHz. Add in components including a 240 GB revodrive X2 and gtx580, 12GB mem and you've still got a very powerfull system that very easily holds it's own today! infact, I'm still not tempted to upgrade the base yet!

But yes, do overclock that 920 - you will easily get 3.8 - 4 GHz on air using a reasonable cooler....certainly for the sake of general useage.

Cheers! That article also has a link to a whole bunch of info about Photoshop CS6 and goes into really good specific detail about "which card", so thanks for digging that one up!! However, my main reason for upgrading the card is to speed up video conversion unrelated to graphic design - I'm talking DVD ripping, that sort of thing. I don't produce videos, other than occasionally editing my personal HD camera movies at a very, very basic level. My mentioning what I use my system for was only to illustrate that I am in fact a very lowly user. :) As far as Photoshop is concerned, my current system handles everything I do using CS6 without any (speed/processing) problems at all, even with my most processor-intensive plug-ins. It's pretty much the same stuff I have been doing since getting this system with CS4 a few years ago. I do also beta test third-party plugins for a developer, and in the early stages these can have speed issues, which we gradually iron out. When I compare notes with other testers my speeds actually hold up very well. In short, I am by no means a power user in terms of graphics processing and as far as Photoshop goes an upgraded card would probably be nice but is not essential. I tried and messed around cursorily (pun intended) with the new CS6 3D features without a problem, BTW. Reading up on some of the cards mentioned in this thread, many refer to high-end Autocad etc., and my requirements are really not "up there".

Given all of the above - and overclocking (scary thought; I've never done that before) and maybe a RAM boost - how does a 1GB Leadtek NVIDIA Quadro 600 Workstation Graphics Card sound? I can get one for AU$140.

i myself used the sniffer hack and have it being used by the mercury playback engine. but i am not any type of video editor, i did that months ago and haven't used premiere since 😛

Well thanks a lot for that. That's exactly the advice I wanted - a specific card, affordable, offering the best CUDA. Searching Aussie sites for me was above and beyond! Kinda neat that you picked the very dealer I use in Australia so I will take your advice and go with the Inno3D GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB. I was prepared to spend up to $250 but was baffled as to what to get to meet my fairly mundane needs, so $125 is well within my budget.
