graphics card too good for my monitor?

hello there. i've recently built a gaming pc, and when i hooked it up to old monitor, i keep getting lines the run horizontally across my screen. any idea on whats going on? feedback would be much appreciated.

gpu - gigabyte hd7970. its hooked up with dvi to vga adapter.

I would make sure the refresh rate is set to 60 hz on both your graphics settings and actual monitor's settings.

lol sorry, i'm kind of a noob. would i do that through my bios?

No, with the card you would do it though catalyst, and the monitor should have settings accessible though its interface (buttons). I would recommend setting the cards first and seeing if it works before changing the monitors refresh rate. In the end though they need to match and be equally divisible by no less then 30 (I recommend having them both set to 60 myself)

they're both set at 60. i had a bit of trouble navigating through the catalyst. but i ended up going to SYSTEM INFORMATIONS, and then COMPONENTS, DISPLAY. and then it showed all the specs to my gpu, and the resolution was 1920 x 1080 x 60hertz.

i ended buying a dvi cable (male to male) and ditching the dvi to vga adaptor. and it worked. no more lines 😀
