I've been looking to upgrade the graphics card in my desktop however i can't seem to find the information on what graphic cards this desktop can support at stock.
the specs are

Intel Core i7-4790 3.6 GHz 64 bit Quad-Core Processor
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 745 4 GB GDDR3
16GB DDR3 RAM (Will be upgrading it to 32Gb shortly)
Can't seem to find what motherboard it has tho. I'm not that savvy with desktops.

most important thing is what power supply it has. open the case and look at the label. the model # will let me look up it's specs or you can post the rated amps available. the 12v amps is the most important number as well as total watts it's rated for. finally, look and see what/how many pcie power connectors it has. either 6 or 6+2 pin power connectors should be there. how many is also needed info.

this info will really determine what you can upgrade to stock.

the psu will have the specs on the label. the dell site won't give any info but the label will. can't say i have ever seen a psu without a spec label, oem or otherwise. i am pretty sure it is the 460w psu which will easily run a 960.

just want to be sure that is the psu it has installed. they xps psu's are actually pretty strong units and if it is the one i think it is, it will easily run the low power 960 which would be a huge upgrade to what is in there now.

Apologies for the very late reply finals took up all my time. However i checked and it has a 460w power supply in it. So from what i've read a 960 will fit and work, However after reading about this bios update apparently the 970 will work in it now, But my other question before i buy the 960. The 970 requires a 500w power supply but i've read after this bios update people have installed the 970 with the 460w power supply with no problem. Any actual truth to this or will i have a problem down the road with the 970 if i don't upgrade the power supply? simply wondering before i buy the 960 but could get the 970 with no problem.

a 970 would also run on that psu as well. it is not very high powered either and your 460w psu will be enough power.

the only thing i do not remember is which of the pcie connectors the psu has. some of the 970's only use a 6 pin but some of the overclocked and super cooled versions use a 6+2 pin connector. check which you have and the card's spec sheet will tell you which one it needs. if you have a 6+2 then your good to go for any of the 970 models. other wise about half will be closed to you if you only have a 6 pin connector. i am pretty sure it has the 6+2 but it has been a while and i can't recall for sure. just take a look at the bundle of wires to see what is there. this is what thye look like if you don't already know

the one on the right is the +2 variety :) and it may not say "pcie" on it but it looks the same

Looks to be a 6 pin connector only. However there appear to be two 6 pin connectors in it. However since it seems to only be a 6 pin connector which models of the 870 could i get?

i have not checked the specific models in a while so i am not sure which ones only need a 6 pin. usually it is listed on the spec page or a quick skimming of the pictures will show what kind of connector it uses. i used to have a list but it is outdated for sure by now.

for the most part, the super oc'ed and big custom coolers will be the ones that need an 8 pin. the closer to reference it is, the more likely it only needs a 6 pin. i do believe that the evga superclocked ones are still 6 pins for a nice oc'ed model with good cooling, but i would have to verify this to be sure.
