Graphics card upgrade from sapphire R9 290 tri-x

Hi all! I'm looking to upgrade my card for the upcoming occulus rift and HTC vive, and given the kind of disappointing results I was getting at 2560 x 1440 with my current card, I didn't think it'd cut it for vr. So I'm looking to upgrade.

I was considering the gtx 980 or the Titan x but I wanted to get some thoughts before I did it. I'm not interested in multi card set ups or water cooling. I don't know how it works and I'm not really interested in learning yet. Given how much many a card is in general I wanted to get thoughts or suggestions because I'm new at this.

Currently my specs are

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

I5 4670k processer

Storm Stryker atx full case

750 watt power supply

And 8 gb of ram

I have about 700 dollars to work with and I'm willing to buy a Titan x if it's the best choice, but I don't even really know if my computer is set up to handle it.

Any thoughts, suggestions or input? Better cards to go with? I'm looking to. Go above the minimum graphics card requirement for vr, which seems to be the R9 290 at current

Only worthwhile upgrades would be the 980 ti and Fury X IMO.

GTX 980 TI is probably your best bet. The main (maybe only) advantage of the Titan X, is all the extra VRAM. The question is, whether or not that will be useful for VR gaming. I'm sure a quick Google search would answer that.

Another thing to keep in mind,if you do go multi-GPU down the road--the VRAM doesn't stack, it's mirrored. In other words, 2 x 4GB cards, in SLI, still means you only have a total of 4GB of VRAM.
