So just thinking if possible to have graphics cards like motherboards so that you could swap out gpu or maybe add more vram or faster vram. The "graphic boards" would have a gpu socket and you'd put in the vram like you would with normal ddr3 ram. You'd have 2 different sockets of course depending if you were to go with AMD or Nvidia. Would this be possible?

My thinking for this was that maybe someone needs a very powerful gpu but perhaps doesn't need 6GB of vram along with it and so that person could just buy less vram and have a better gpu. Maybe along the way you discover you want to start doing things that require a lot of vram so you just swap out however much vram you have for more vram.

Its an interesting concept.

I doubt it will ever come into play however. Most of the components on the PCB are soldered to said PCB, so a rework of the entire thing would be necessary. Once that was completed which could take years, you would have to get AMD and Nvida to release the chips themselves to the public. Past that, they would have to release the memory modules as well.

I believe the architectures are also simple too different to allow for such customization as well.
OEM cards would die out, along with their companies. I would hate to see companies like Sapphire, ASUS, EVGA etc take a hit in sales that much. Some companies that just make cards, may even go under.

Ill just leave it with, If it aint broken, dont fix it.
