Graphics Cards with loud buzzing under load

A couple of days ago my Gigabyte Gtx 980 ti g1 gaming started making a loud buzzing noise when gaming. The same thing happens in the GPU-Z render test. The noise is definitely not coming from the fans as it happens when the fans are off as well.
I've tested it in two different setups and it does it in both. I also tried my old Gigabyte Gtx 970 g1 gaming in both setups and it also buzzes under load.
Both cards also stutter when choosing the graphics menu from Hatreds main menu.
I tried swapping the Power supplies between them and the buzzing is still there.

Setup 1
i5 4670k
Asus Z97-A
8GB DDR3
EVGA 1000 P2

Setup 2
i5 6600k
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
16GB DDR4
EVGA 850 G2

I think it is a coil whine. It is common in the GTX 970 models or usually any high end graphics card. Just guessing though, who knows it might be something else. By the way does the card show any vibrations? Try touching the card and see if it vibrates. Both the setups have EVGA power supplies so......If you have a PSU that is not EVGA try it. By the way, the game hatred has some graphical issues in the main menu. Many people complain that they get low FPS and stuttering too. Cheers

Hi

Ye I have heard that basically nearly all GTX 970's (or ATI equivalent) and upward have coil whine, I recently bought an MSI GTX 970 to replace my Sapphire R9 270. The GTX 970 is a monster with my i5 4460.

I have only ever heard coil whine once from my new GPU or at least it thought it may of been, it mostly just sounded like an small fan spinning but I didn't mind as the card had been on for 4 hours straight and gaming hard so it was understandable that it may be tired/overworked.

I have only ever heard that coil whine can come from a PSU or a graphics card, I have a Corsair CX 500 PSU and it can handle it fine with the PSU not coil whining when my pc hungers for power. The pc is rather quiet come to think of it.

Coil whine is not bad actually, only that it is noisy and might distract your gaming moments. It just shows that you have powerful card 😀 and for vidicidiv, Try enabling V-Sync in games in order to limit the FPS so that the GPU doesn't have to work so hard in order to achieve the high framerates. This is the easiest way to stop coil whine

Ye v-sync is one of the things I always set to on as I hate screen tearing. It will also help prolong the life of your GPU as it will be forced to making the frames that are required.

For example if you played I don't know halo 1 on pc and stared at the floor with no v-sync you'd be going into the 1000 of frames a second and that's when it whines.

People say input lag which is caused by v-sync most people find a pain but truthfully I have never seen or felt any input lag in any games with v-sync

V-sync is only useful if the gpu is making more frames than your display can show like 60z, 120hz, etc.. or when certain games have fps capped to 30 or 60.

Otherwise generally v-sync does introduce micro-lag especially for fast paced shooter games. Yes it does cause input lag as I tested it on BF3. So in that case you rather have some screen tearing over input lag.

Alright so the noise is definitely coming from the GPU.

I've tried a different motherboard from gigabyte and a corsair hx750i with the 6600k setup and the noise is still there when under load. When playing games like Team fortress 2 and project zomboid the buzzing is not as bad but is still noticeable. When playing Witcher 3 its very loud but when i Alt-Tab to the desktop the noise turns into an even louder screech until i go back into the game.

I've got an Acer predator xb270hu so g-sync has been on the whole time. Tried turning it off and using V-sync but no difference.

I also tried my friends gigabyte 980ti and its the same thing so I'm thinking its something other than the actual GPU that's creating it.

Okay well a GPU should not be doing this as if it was coil whine capping the frames should stop the buzzing of the coils as it would take the load off the GPU.

I would recommend you contact the supplier that you purchased the card off and request a replacement.

If nothing solves the problem then the best thing to do is contact your graphics card supplier and RMA the card. It definitely is the graphics card but just wondering though, did you try different NVIDIA drivers? are your drivers the newest version? drivers could also be a big problem like for example overheating and low FPS, fans not spinning at the right RPM at the right time.

I think Sensei Gamer has a point there about drivers as when I got my gtx 970 and played games like borderlands 2, skyrim, fallout 3 and so on NVidia experience was setting the optimal to ultra on all of my games while when I played them I could hardly manage 45fps at 1080p.

So I used Nvidia experience to update my drivers and now I get a straight 60fps in basically all my games 1080p and I can even use DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) to down sample games (Basically a better kind of SSAA) to 1440p and fallout 3, skyrim, dishonoured, torchlight 2 and many more now look so sharp and still stay at 60fps maxed even with the increased pixels being rendered compared to 1080p.
I hardly see any jaggies anymore now.

So all in all it is totally worth updating your drivers.

my gpu is doing the same thing 🙁 (i have a nvidia gtx 770) does anybody know how to solve this??
(update)

I've just found out what it is and this video might help.

(2nd update)

iv'e fixed the problem be downloading this software http://store.steampowered.com/app/268850/ and limiting my fps to 120, hope this helps 😀 (when you load up the software you can find the fps limiter by scrolling left and right on the bottom)
