Hey guys need a bit of help here clarifying a few points after doing some extensive searching.

My current system is 3 years old and has the following specs.

Intel I7-930
6 gigs of ram
Radeon HD 5770

Now Im planning on doing a 2 stage upgrade, first now and the next in six months. ATM my GPU is in dire need of an upgrade and I've been looking at the 7950 / 7970 or the GTX 680's.

My issue is, I know my I7 is a bit dated now and Im concerned that buying one of these amazing GPU's might not help me to terribly much with the CPU bottleneck I may (or may not) be getting.

Ill be doing a big processor / MB update hopefully in May or July but thats a ways out.

So my question is, if your in my shoes with this rig, would you go with a 7950 and OC it, or just bite the bullet and get a 7970 or 680 and enjoy the performance increase till I can upgrade the CPU?

Solution
its not really dated. its still as good as a i5 2500k. just that id suggest a overclock for more performance. it can be easily done

the good values are the 7870xt for 200 dollars, the 7950 for around 280, and the gtx 670 for 360 if you want nvidia.

id get the 7950
