Booted up my old PC this morning and there are green and sometimes red vertical lines. After windows boots to the login screen the monitor picks it up as going out of a suitable resolution.

I have checked the internals and made sure the ram and graphics card are connected correctly.

I asked a friend and they said it could be the motherboard. It booted fine yesterday but it reasonably old and i did expect it to break soon. Any advice would be helpful?

Solution
You might try booting into Safe Mode (F8). This uses a default resolution and you can try System Restore to see if it's corrupted drivers. But best guess is GPU problem. You didn't say what model computer, or if it's on board GPU, CPU/GPU or video card.

It sounds as if there is a loose cable or your GFX card is failing.
