Solution
I see, well if the problem is related to the LCD screen of your laptop the cause can be a one or two things.
The first is very obvious, or should be if someone else also uses your laptop from time to time.

Hold down your Fn key on the keyboard, and along your top row of keys the F keys from F1 to F12
You should see A icon in blue that looks like a sun symbol, simply tap it and see if the screen brightens up.
The other keys to look for are on your numeric number pad of you laptop if it has one.
The settings for Brightness, or white light brightness can be seen on there also with a Blue symbol or by hitting the Plus and minus keys once you hit the Sun symbol by keeping the FN key pressed down at the same time.

If it fails to work then...

If it fails to work then it means that what we call the back light array of the Lcd screen its self is failing.
This produces white light that is placed behind the Lcd screen so the image on the Lcd screen can be seen by your eyes.
Often the fault can be with what we call the Inverter board used to drive the back white light and it beginning to fail after age if the laptop is very old but you can find replacement ones for your model and brand name of laptop to replace them to fix your problem off E-bay for example at a small cost providing you are willing to take apart your laptop.

If you are unsure about how to dismantle your laptop, by using You tube.
Putting the model number and the brand of your laptop in a search you can find Video`s on how to dismantle them in the right order and manner, and reverse the process when assembly is required.
You will find the make and model number on your laptop located on a sticker on the back side of the laptop.

Hope it helps.

Solution
This is a problem that has plagued HP for years now most the issues are hardware related, "Grey" means the normally Black screen back light is working fine these are the two common issues I have seen.

1. Flex Cable comes lose or damaged which allows the back light to work but LCD to not come on or turn on and off.
2. GPU Soldier goes bad, some people have had luck baking them in the oven, I just used a SMD heatgun with a 5mm tip to focus the heat to the points of interest around the GPU.

The Flex cable is the easiest part to check, the LCD is easy to disassemble, 2 screws at the bottom of the unit and the rest is either snaps or some double sided tape.
