Grinding noise HP 5510 printer

My HP Photosmart 5510 printer makes a terrible "grinding" noise when switched on & also when cleaning the print heads. The carriage is stuck on the right hand side & will only move about 1 cm to the left but then something stops it moving any further. I have followed internet tips & got the top cover off as well as the 2 printhead springs & I can lift out the printhead. However the carriage still will not move to the left - something is obstructing it, but I cannot see what.
Is it possible to remove the actual carriage assembly from its tracks. This appears to be a frequent problem on this model & probably others, but I have not found any solution on the net.
The printer is out of warranty - I rang HP in the hope that they would offer some help but none was forthcoming - disappointing but not surprising!

Hi Someam,
Thanks for your suggestion - however I had already seen this HP video & despite trying all the steps the carriage would still only move about 1 cm from the "parking" area at the right hand of the printer.

I found a video on youtube which showed me how to get the top cover (so at least I could remove the ink cartridges) & I removed the 2 springs that hold the print head. However the print head carriage will still not move any more than the 1 cm.

Is it possible for me to further dismantle the carriage mechanism so that I can find what is stopping it move?

Thanks

Hi Jerry61,

I was hoping that the steps on the video would bring you to a solution.
Even with you finding yet another video your carriage remains stuck.
Well due to that and the fact that almost all HP printers come with a
one year manufacture replacement warranty and that HP does NOT bring in
printer for service.

I do not have any other solutions. I did go to HPSupport forum and I do see that
some in the community have had a similiar kind of problem see link at bottom.
However, I think the steps are pretty similar to the first link. I did see where some say it is easy to miss a step or some ink build up, etc. With that said, other than repeating the steps, it is starting to sound like your printer may need to be serviced.

Hello, Jerry61,
I have run in exactly the same problem with my HP5510. Did you find any solution?
As far as I examined the problem, it looks like a lower part of a carriage (which I suppose is used only for carriage parking time and prevents printing heads from drying and is not really part of the carriage is stuck to the carriage) obstructs the movement of the carriage.

I am going to try to separate that lover part of the carriage. Could you please drop me a link in which you found how to get off the top cover and get accesses to the head while in "parking" area.
