So I currently have a gt 1030 passively cooled graphics card with an i7-2600 cpu in a hp compaq 2400 sff. I have been happy playing games like Monster Hunter World, war thunder and battlefield 1 with it slightly overclocked (actually runs quite well) but I want to play tomb raider and battlefield 5 and my current gpu is not up to the task. Would a gtx 750 ti be a reasonable upgrade? Or is there a better stepping stone like a gtx 660? I am not trying to build a new pc right now just need a little boost. I can get one off of ebay for under $75. Would there be a different card that is better than the gtx750ti? and can my 240w psu handle it?

Not really, if you want to perform an upgrade, work your way up the order in the GTX1000 series or latter but due to your prebuilt you're relegated to working with half height cards, if I rule out that the PSU is incapable of driving anything more powerful than a GTX1030.

750ti and 1030 GDDR5 are almost the same. Don't buy, it will be a waste.

my pc had a GT 1030 during the gpu crisis, then I upgraded after some money was saved.
for a real upgrade, try saving up for an Asus GTX 1650 Mini. This will pair well with your i7-2600.
I recommend this brand of 1650, because it is sure to work with older systems. Used it for awhile with my 2600.

If you can upgrade your power supply to something with pcie power cables it would open up an entire world of GPU upgrade options. Otherwise like Tac25 stated, a GTX 1650 that doesnt require a pcie power cable would be your best best, Asus, PNY, and Zotac all make GTX 1650's that dont require a PCIE power cable. Alternatively you could pickup an RX 6400 it and the GTX 1650 trade blows with the RX 6400 being MARGINALLY (like 3 or 4% on average, not really worth fully recommending one over the other) faster, that should also provide a nice upgrade from your GT 1030.
