Just picked up a couple of these because they are so cheap.

GeForce GT 220 2GB 128-bit DDR2

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187107

I got one for my brothers 5670 as a dedicated physX card and I got one for my gtx 570. Should this card do a fair job as a dedicated physX card? I have read mixed reviews around other site but what to see what the toms hardware community has to say about it.

Any input is appreciated...

Clearly that is not true. If you look at the charts, having any dedicated PhysX card is better than having no PhysX card, even for a GTX570.

With the GTX460, there was a 22% performance increase using just a "crappy" GT220.

So far I have decided that it would be a waste for my brother to spend that little extra on a second card when he could get a better single card on the green side and not worry about driver hacks and such. For me and my 570 I would like the best physX card I can get for about $120 CAD.

Any suggestions for that price range?

on the high end of things, probably a gtx 260 off ebay...

To clarify to the OP and myself:

Have we determined that a gtx 275 or gtx 460 would be a complete waste as a dedicated physx card? thats what I'm gathering...?

this is becoming more interesting to me as I wouldn't mine hunting down a cheap 8800/9800 gt or gtx 260 to try with my 6870...

is the patching a pain in the neck and is it stable/reliable? anyone doing this currently can you shed some light on this topic.

Just poking around looks like crysis 2 will not use physx, but rather an inhouse physics engine in the crytek 3 enigine... that kind of sucks for people trying to utilize a dedicated physx setup, and kind of a defeat for physx in general being that crysis 2 should be a huge game based on how popular crysis, and crysis warhead were...

It's already been said, and thanks to matto shown, that a 250 or equivalent is pretty much the absolute most you need.

A GTS450 has 192 cores

A GTS250 has 128 cores.

9800gt has 112.

gt240 has 96.

gts430 has 96.

gt220 only has 48.

A GTX460 has 336. Yep, that would be overkill.

EDIT: jjb - it's extremely easy to patch. Install regular drivers. Reboot. Install Nvidia drivers. Install PhysX drivers. Install patch. Reboot. Done.
Might want to test with FluidMark to make sure it's working. If it's not, repatch and reboot. You can not use PhysX after patching if you don't reboot.

Worked first try for me, in less than 15 minutes.

thats def a great card but it comes with that price premium so if you got the cash go for it, you can get a gtx 260 cheaper on ebay, but if new is what you want then get the evga 450, either would also make great backup gpus if your main monster were ever to go down... which hopefully for your sake never happens

Well, yeah it would work superbly. Just keep in mind PhysX is only utilized in a dozen games. Metro 2033, Cryostasis, Mirror's Edge, Dark Void, Batman: AA, Mafia 2... and... Oh, Sacred 2. Um. That's about it, I think there's a couple more. So that's like 10 games.

Is it worth $150 extra for a little more eye candy in 10 games (at most) that you'll play? That's why I spent $65 on a GT240.

That is true but aprox $130 after applicable taxs, shipping and then a rebate. You just cant beat the price for a card like that.

I sort of have some spare cash in that price range as I'm waiting for the sandy bridge chipset to become available again from that "little hiccup". I don't even have my pc built. I'm missing the mobo, cpu, and drives. I decided that I'll pick up another gpu while I wait. :D

How about $70? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150475&cm_re=gt240-_-14-150-475-_-Product

Or $65 for a 430 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162067&cm_re=430-_-14-162-067-_-Product

Or $60 for a 9800GT http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814261046&cm_re=9800gt-_-14-261-046-_-Product

whatever floats your boat, personally I would go for something like nforce4max recommends so that way you aren't throwing down double that amount for what in the end does not amount to much, in my opinion it is a much better idea to spend like 50-60 to have a feature like dedicated physx instead of more than twice that amount for really the same exact experience, but that is just my opinion if you really really love physx that much then go for the gts 450 is will like wolfram23 said "perform superbly" and a gtx 260 off ebay will perform the same as the gts 450 in physx and the core 216 models (of the gtx 260) should perform a hair better as compared to the original models that had 192 cores, but I'm sure that based on what everyone is saying that the differences are hard to quantify... I believe that basically sums up the physx conundrum

no way for better performance and around the same price tag (cheaper before rebates) I would still get a 9800 or 8800 gt off ebay, it will perform better and likely cost about the same, unless you are really against buying something off ebay, but you said you have time to wait why not, also im not sure if you got to read my comment above bc I think we were typing at the same time so check it out^^^

I'll just stick with a 450 and I can't go wrong. They all have massive deals with $30 MIR, paying $90 for one seems pretty good. Plus I like those 10 games, I really enjoyed batman on the xbox 360, I would not mind playing through it again on pc with more eye candy. Plus I can't wait for Arkam City.
