after overplaying this game it just stopped working one day........it just wont run no matter if I del all registry values and reinstall with update patch from rockstar.......
I run an athlon xp 2400 with asus a7n8x and a 9700 pro...
Anybody?
HELP!!!
(ok its not that bad but is kinda annoying...)

One really good game.. never got past the Yakuza missions though got distracted by the release of Op Flash GOTY.

Well I know this sounds very drastic but if you can't pinpoint the problem, backup your game save files and wipe the drive.

Hey man lets not get carried away..........
I dont feel like doing another Xp install just so I can play gta 3, By the way I already finished it although the last missions are a b**ch....
If u got anything more practical Id love to hear but otherwise....

I thought it was a pretty easy game, all told. Oh well.

What's the problem? What errors? What anything? I get calls here at AT&T and they say "I can't connect". WTF does that mean?

Come on, details details details....

XP 2500+ Barton @ 2256Mhz
A7N8X Dlx
2x512MB Corsair PC3200
MSI GF3Ti 500 @ 265/570
16x DVD-ROM
2x80GB 7200RPM Maxtor
Onboard audio
3DMark 2001 SE - 10528

very simple like I said in my first post it wont run, meaning it wont even load-you double click and nada...
although u can see on task manager that it tried to execute, and if u try to run it in compatibility mode (which is what rockstar suggest) for windows 95 then u get an alert "gta 3 is not compatible with windows 95",
In short-the program will not start.
Software:
Windows Xp Pro all service packs and updates installed, latest catalyst drivers (3.2)and nforce 2 drivers
Hardware (though I doubt this is a hardware issue):
Athlon xp 2400
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Ati 9700 pro
(2* 256)512 Mb Kingston ddr 333
maxtor ata 133 40 gb
onboard sound (nforce 2)
thats all I guess.....
any clues?

ah HAH. See? Details help. You could've meant it would crash when loading a map, or prompt for a cd even though the cd was in the drive, or just as you said, it is unresponsive when trying to open it.

Have you tried the patch? If no, try it, if yes, try the game without it.

Does the CD spin up? Does anythink blink or whir or spin or bark or quack or fart in your computer? Is there any hint of action when you try to start the game?

Have you tried using a no-cd patch to load the game? You can get them at http://www.megagames.com. I'm not promoting warez, but it's convenient when playing multiplayer games that you want to play but are too dumb to remember to put the cd in the drive, or you just want to keep the cd in mint condition because you use it so much and don't want to have to get a new game when your dumb brother takes the cd out of the drive and leaves it laying face-down on a concrete floor so that when the game doesn't work you have to beat him like an ugly step-child until the dog doesn't recognizes him and eats his testicles for lunch... *breath*

Give those a shot, and let us know.....

This might be worth a try...

Programs-Windows Explorer-Gta III-..try the app with the most bits

This works for me most of the time..

No Cats or Geese where actually harmed in the making of Might & Majic IX

I had the same problem on my other computer. It stop working for my kid, and she tried to install it again. It was a dual boot, I don't think default would of install to Win98 though, meaning she wouldn't of been able to point it els where. Anyway it stopped working in WinXP, so I figured I would use Win98, since it was a dual boot, but it wouldn’t work on there either. I uninstall the game with no luck, but I didn’t search for any registry values, but you say that didn’t work either. I ended up reinstalling the OS, I wanted to just have WinXP anyways. I know what your talking about, so be sure to post if you figure it out. Good luck.

Try creating another partition just for the game on your computer. That should work(if you really want to play it that bad) Hopefully you'll get it going. pretty fun game

As they say in supportland, odds are whatever you or you PC was doing just before your problem started is the reason, probably there is another program stopping GTA3 from starting right, any SW issues would have been sorted by a reinstall... halt every program you can in the background, especially if you have a broadband internet connection PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT THE CABLE !!!
run MSconfig & see what in the startup list of programs you can not identify & uncheck what is not needed ie general progam files entries... keep the criticals checked or you will have problems... but look out for strangly named entries... if mcafee AV/firewall select 'allow all'... thats all for now...

Hmmm, wonder if I can get a valid page fault ???
these invalid ones are far too commonplace...
