Im picking a graphics card and the 1060 3gb has just been released and its cheaper than the 970.
i'd like to play - GTA V, Fallout 4 and Rust maxed out or close to with around 60ish fps (i know i'm asking alot)
I'm aware that the higher the texture quality the more Vram is required but it seems like from what ive seen the 970 can handle maxing out those games fine and the difference between the two cards is only 512mb seen as the 970 is crippled + 780's are 3gb and i know a guy running gta v on full with a 780 but i'd like to see what you guys think is best.
cheers.

The GTX 1060 is what you want. Performs on par with a GTX 980. :p
They essentially have the same VRAM when it comes down to it.
The cheaper model you're most likely referring to is the EVGA SC 1060 which is an ITX card with single fan cooling, a smaller PCB, lower power delivery and lower boost clock speeds as a result.
Don't buy that.
The best value 1060 at the moment is this: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/QVWrxr/zotac-geforce-gtx-1060-6gb-amp-edition-video-card-zt-p10600b-10m
Cools well and has great performance.

Here in Australia the cheapest 970 is the zotac at $320 and that from the reviews is a complete pos and the cheapest 1060 is the PNY twin fan at $300

You dont have to pay for international shipping with newegg as they now sell through Australian Distributors from what I've read meaning you just pay for domestic shipping not international.
Thanks for the answer's and i might buy the 1060 from that site or another distributor like pccg even though their expensive af

Sry to say this, but very bad advise, ok maybe not really bad but confusing. He asks for the 1060 3gb version and got recommended the 6gb zotac which is a big difference in price in most countries. However its correct that in his case he should definately go with the 6gb 1060 over the 970. The Evga sc 3gb is a good card tho, and mostly much better than the 970 and cheaper at the same time. It stays cool with 1 cooler and offers decent performance. The Zotac 1060 6gb amp is known to run too hot, doenst even have a backplate(not that important but stilll a thing) and has such minor flaws which makes it not such a good buy imo, its still expensive, depends on country maybe. You can get the evga 3gb for under 200 $ tho, which is great, if u dont need the extra vram.
Gta V uses 3.5 vram maxed out and is even a bit older title, so if u want to max out new games on solid 60 fps, without frame time drops u should pay more and get the 1060 6gb over the 3gb 1060 and 970 for sure!
The 3gb version is also less powerful than the 6gb 1060, but thats only by 5-10% and doenst really play a big role, the vram problems if u want to max out and high textures is way more important and thats why in some games both versions are almost equal in fps and in other games theres a big difference in perfomance. The 3gb version was at first targeted for the asian, more mmo based market and is totally fine if u want the nearly 980 performance with high fps, without needing that vram, for example wow, overwatch and esports, moba + older titles in general. Or if u can just live with not maxing out textures all day.
I know the topics is months old and he prolly got his card now, but i wanted to correct it for fellow readers. And i also hope he got the 6gb Msi version and not 3 gb in his case ..

Note that I mentioned the best value.
The cost was much lower at the time of writing.
The price difference was very minimal, and I don't know about you, but i'd typically spend $10 more for a better cooler....
The Zotac obviously has less than optimal temps, but notice I posted the MSI Gaming 3GB? o_O
The EVGA SC has poor boosts due to the smaller PCB and poor cooling due to the single fan design, the MSI is a much beetter choice.

Haha thanks for the info mate but ive been running a GTX 780 i picked up cheap for a few weeks now, Its pretty beastly and honestly the 970 and 1060 were way out of my budget ($400 AUD) and that was including having to buy a new psu and ram so yeah. im happy with what i got i paid $190 (AUD) for the 780 reference.

I know this is a very old forum but i think my gpu is bottle necking against my new ryzen 7 2700x. I currently have a msi 970 and only got fps problems when i upgraded. Is the 1060 actaully better than 970? If so ill sell it and buy 1060
