Note: I bolded all important points.

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone could help me with a pretty frustrating problem with my gpu. It's an Asus Strix GeForce GTX 1060 6gb and the problem is that in ALL of the games that I've tried to play lately my fps fluctuates all over the place, which makes them completely unplayable. For example, I've played Ark:SE before on near max settings at around 70 fps. But now when I play my fps starts out at 70 (from 70 it can go down to 65,57,46 etc. and then randomly up to 81. This all happens in a matter of 5 seconds.), and as soon as I move in-game my fps drops to 5ish and either stays like that until I stop moving, or my game freezes for a few seconds. (MISC: At first I believed the problem to be ark as it is a very, very buggy game. I even tried reinstalling it.) THen I tried other games like GTA V, TF2, Rust, Dying Light, and even Overwatch which proved that it wasn't some weird steam-only issue. This all started a few days ago and I haven't changed any settings with my PC. I do remember that I got a new GeForce driver but I can't remember if I updated my drivers before or after the problem started. My specs are as follows:

  • Asus Strix GeForce GTX 1060 6gb
    Gigabyte 970a-ds3p
    8gb RAM
    AMD FX-8320 8-core
    WD HDD 1 tb
    Windows 10
Thank you! in advance to anyone who thinks they can help me with this issue! :^)

EDIT: Also when I play games/ casually on the internet my disk usage( according to task manager) is 99-100% ( I don't know enough to make a connection but that doesn't seem normal to me :^/ . Thanks again!

The issue isnt with your 1060... It is more of an issue with your CPU, the FX 8320. The 8320's single core performance is not very good. Sure, it has 8 cores, but they are 8 crappy cores. So the GPU isnt the problem.

I think your best solution is to purchase a new CPU, which would also require a new motherboard... AMD's Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 are great upgrades, but you would need to buy a new Motherboard and new RAM. That can be a bit too expensive!

What you could do is upgrade to an Intel system. Use an intel i7 or i5 and motherboad, and transfer the RAM over. You can reuse the RAM.

Depending on your budget, check out intel's I7 and I5 CPU's with newer sockets like LGA 1150, 1151, 2011... You would need a new Motherboard with it, but you can just transfer the RAM from your current rig if you buy a motherboad that supports DDR3 RAM.

Unfortunately the 8320 is the issue here, not the 1060.

Sorry to question you, but are you sure? If the 8320 is the problem then why did I not have this problem before? Also, does the 100% disk usage seem normal to you?

I have to agree myself. the FX 8320 is 5 years old now and it's single core performance isn't that good either. I'd recommend upgrading to an i5 or i7 CPU or the new Ryzen.
I currently have an i5 4690k at 4.6GHz and its more than enough to run anything I throw at it. It even beats some i7s in single core performance.
