GTX 1060 compatible with an older mobo

Hi,

I have the following motherboard a Gigabyte P55 US3L Rev 2.0

Do you think a 1060 work work on this older board? I have updated the bios but the last update was 2010.

A GTX 1060 is roughly twice as powerful as a GTX 670. You would see massive gains. Not to the full potential of the 1060 but quite substantial.

Most of the time it will work... however your CPU is nowhere near fast enough to handle the 1060 anyway. Unless that is a temporary arrangement until you can upgrade the platfrom, you'll be throwing your money away on a card that's going to be held back by your CPU

Assuming you have an i5 750 ( very common with P55 ) it does pretty well with a 1060. Certain game engines won't do as well as others with a CPU that old and resolution and graphics settings will also affect performance but here is a pretty good comparison with a 1060 and RX480 on older hardware.

Thank you for responding, i was planning on upgrading in stages, which i have always done. I have left it much longer than i normally do.

I have been looking at a 2nd hand i7 that is compatible with my board they are quite expensive and i may as well save for a newer i5 6500.

Interesting read, i do play Arma 3 a lot. It still runs ok with the right settings. I currently have a GTX 670. Without upgrading the CPU and mobo i don't think i would get massive gains.
