Hey guys, so I've bought a gtx1060 and I'm attempting to run a dual monitor setup. When I run it with my hdmi and display port it works fine. Now, when I run it with my dvi cable AND display port, it doesn't work. Anyone have some ideas for me to try?

Solution

You didn't mention 1440p or 144hz at all!

DVI can't run 1440p at 144hz.

You'd want to run one monitor on DP and another on HDMI 2.0 (MUST BE...

Now I'm confused. I've been using this dvi-d cable for my monitor for a while. It has worked great so far, givinge me the 144hz that it advertised. I've also had another old TV plugged in with an HDMI and it still worked.

My card has two dvi-d ports, one hdmi, and one display port. What do you recommend that I do in order to hit 144hz on both monitors at their native resolution of 1440p and 1080p?

DVI can't run 1440p at 144hz.

You'd want to run one monitor on DP and another on HDMI 2.0 (MUST BE 2.0 specifically). Both of those cables can do 1440p at 144hz so it doesn't matter which you use on which.

Sorry about that. I'm still learning of all of the different capabilities of all of the different video cables. So I can use my display port to run one and now I need to get an hdmi 2.0 to run the other? That should work, correct?

No worries!

That should work perfectly.

Well, now I feel pretty stupid. I should have included a lot more information in the original post, but I have things figured out now.

Current monitors
Dell s2716dg
Asus vg248qe

The Dell supports HDMI 2.0 and Display Port 1.4 so I am having no problems as of now getting the fullest from this monitor.
The Asus supports Dual Link DVI-D, Display Port 1.4, and HDMI 1.4, so my only options to reach 144hz are with dvi-d and dp 1.4.

As of right now, the Dell is working great, but my asus is running at 60hz and I'm rather let down that my gpu only has one dp 1.4. If anyone has any other ideas, I'm all ears. Otherwise, I plan on selling the Asus and getting a nice IPS display.

You could just use the HDMI 2.0 on the Dell and DP 1.4 on the Asus and call it a day!

Now I'm getting 144hz on my asus, but only 60hz on my dell? I'm rather confused. I made for certain to get an hdmi 2.0 cable which is good for 4k@60hz, shouldn't it be able to run 1440p@144hz?

Edit: I've also just realized that gsync doesn't work on hdmi. So I pretty much have to run display port on the Dell. I really just need to figure out a way to make my dvi-d work at the same time as my display port.

Yes it should. 🙁. Something isn't right man you've got it all set up correctly on paper. Sorry we couldn't provide a true solution.

give me about an hour and ill run down exactly how everything is currently connected. im not in my house right now

Okay, here is how I have everything ran.
1060 is connected to motherboard with sufficient power.
hdmi 2.0 is ran to my asus.
dp is ran to my dell.
dell has power saver turned off.
I've reinstalled my graphics drivers.
peripherals are all ran to their respective ports on my motherboard.
both monitors are receiving power.

Online, people are saying that the asus does not have an hdmi 2.0 input, that it is actually 1.4 which doesn't support refresh rates higher than 60hz at 1080p.

My main concern is why, when I use my dvi-d dual link to connect my gpu to my asus, my dell stops working, but the asus works as intended.
