TL;DR

GPU idles at 65C and when I play a game goes up to 75-80 C
Fan is at 15% during Idle. Tried EVGA Precision and MSI Afterburner and the fans started spinning and GPU temps started going down but couldn't apply settings and once programs were closed the fans also stopped performing well.

Hey guys, I have a GTX 1060 graphics card by EVGA and I've realized for a while now that it idles at 65 Celsius no matter what, and when I play a game it goes up to 75 Celsius and the fan barely spins. I downloaded MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision and adjusted the fan and it went down to 50 C Idle but for some reason both programs don't allow me to apply the settings. Once I close the programs the fans completely stop and if I reopen the program the fan starts spinning again. I am using HW Monitor to closely monitor my GPU temps. Does anyone have any idea WHY my fan barely spins when needed?

Solution
Thats idle? If so its what I thought, you are running at your base clock speeds at idle. Under clocks toward the bottom of that image, see graphics at 1506mhz and memory at 4007mhz? those should both be in the 100s at idle to conserve power and produce less heat. This is probably because the setting 'power management mode' in nvidia control panel under manage 3d settings was changed to 'prefer maximum performance', change that to 'optimal power' click apply at the bottom right and restart the computer.
Thats quite warm for idle, my 1060 idles at 32c with the fans completely off and a 20c ambient temp. What are the clock speeds of the gpu at idle? It sounds like its running at its base clock speed even at idle, or you have very poor case airflow.

These cards have very relaxed fan profiles stock that prioritize noise over temps. What evga 1060 do you have specifically?

Hey there! Thanks for replying.
Heres a picture of HW Monitor running

I have the NVIDIA Geforce 1060 6GB if that's what you're referring to.

Just changed the setting, let me restart the computer and I'll keep you updated on how it goes. Thanks!

No luck... It's still at 65 C and the graphics and memory MHz are still the same from the last screenshot. I really don't know what's wrong.

This should bring idle temps down considerably, though I doubt it will affect load temps 80c is a bit warm for load but its not dangerous and it shouldn't be throttling at those temps.

With the stock fan profile the fan/s don't even spin until about 60c or so in most 1060s, so it may take a bit for your idle temps to come down after the restart with no gpu fan spinning.

Actually, I waited it out and my GPU temps have dropped remarkably now.

50 is still not as low as your idle temps, and any idea why my fan was only at 15% when it was at 65C? I'm starting to think my GTX 1060 is faulty or broken somehow.

I run two monitors but they're both 60hz. I am upgrading to 144hz by the end of this month though.

See how the clock speeds are in the 100s now versus the other screenshot? The temps will probably continue to drop, or just turn the fans on with msi afterburner for a bit let the temps drop as low as they can go close afterburner and see how far the temps come back up. What gtx 1060 do you have? Is it an EVGA card with a custom cooler or an nvidia reference card with a blower cooler. I would expect those temps with a blower cooler, or even that small evga 1060 with the aluminum block cooler. Can you link the card you bought on amazon or wherever?

130s is idle for, so temps should come down nicely now, when you do upgrade like I said if mixed refresh rates don't forget to drop the 144hz one down to 120. This is an old bug in NVidia drivers took me ages to find a way to keep my card cool :)

Yeah I wouldn't expect much better out of that cooler, I would say your temps are perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. The 3gb version of the card you have which if anything I would expect to run cooler actually hits 82c under load in this review.

Also the fan at 15% at 65c is perfectly normal, it will only go to maybe 50% or so (not sure exactly how high on that particular card) with the stock fan profile and that will be when its in the 80s and upper 70s.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. You've helped me out a lot. I went through the Nvidia Control Panel and set my fans at 20% and now my GPU temp is around the 30s. This is great, thanks so much Dunlop0078!
