What would i need to get this beast working on this system? I planned to pick up the mini version of the gtx 1060 i dont know what powersupply will go in

Solution
Ah ok so you have a Desktop (DT) model.

So good news, you can get an upgraded PSU but with a max wattage of 400w.
Sorta bad news, the PSU's don't have a native 6pin connector.
Amazon and newegg both sell them

So presuming you can find a low profile 1060 card that can fit within the space confines of your case, and your willing to roll the dice on it, you may be able to get it running. You'd have to use a 6-pin PCI Express to Two 4-pin Molex Power Adapter Cable to power it but if the card doesn't come with one you can get them easy enough online. They tend to only run a few bucks on newegg.
There's a lot of maybes involved in this.

1. Which 790 do you have? If you have the Mini tower, the one that looks most like a normal tower, there is hope.

2. If you have the Mini tower, and assuming your BIOS will support it, you'll still need to do some upgrades. Namely, you will need a new PSU. Before you buy any hardware tho, make sure to update your BIOS to the latest release. SR-71 mentioned this before. Lots of older premades have issues with modern cards, and I know from first hand experience how twitchy the 790's can be with expansion cards. Even if you get everything else in line, the BIOS may bite you in the butt, so just keep that in mind.

3. Hardware, you're gonna need a new PSU. The mini tower has a 265 watt power supply and with 35w max going to the PCI-e 16 slot. Nvidia recommends a 400w PSU for this card. Even if your PSU could support that much power, the card needs a 6pin connector. Luckily the 790 can take an ATX PSU. So E-Waste that PSU and pick up a 400-550w PSU. I'd recommend a modular one, because you're not going to have a ton of room for a mass of cables coming off that PSU.
I'd recommenced a min of a 500w in case you want to build up a new rig in the near future and reuse the PSU.

or for a very nice one

Also something to keep in mind, on other forums with this configuration there was some concern voiced over the 35w draw on the PCI-E slot. In theory the card shouldn't be pulling much wattage from the slot since it needs to be powered directly through the PSU. There's a lot of things in life that "should" work, not all of them do, so run the risk if you feel its worth it.

4. Measure the space inside your case to make sure a new card will fit. There are hard drive cages next to the motherboard so you likely wont be able to fit much more than the width of the motherboard.

I know this is late, but I just built a system with an Optiplex 790 (i7 2600, 16gb ram), upgraded the PSU to an Evga 430w, added a 120gb ssd and a Gigabyte GTX 1060 3gb Windforce OC. Everything works perferctly.

Is your 790 is a sff? I am planning to buy a 790 Sff and use the same gfx card as you.

Nop, its a MT. If you buy a sff, you'll need a low profile gpu.
