hello im having a hard time deciding which card i should get. the gtx 1060 is a bit faster on the bench marks i see but i'v seen a lot of people talk about the rx 480 is better on dx12 and im wondering if the rx 480 is better for future proofing my rig. p.s im planing on having this card for at least 2 years.

Solution
The 480 with 8GB is slightly cheaper I believe than the 1060 with 6GB. Given that Rise of the Tomb Raider will happily consume 6.5GB on max settings, I'd personally go with the 480. The speed is roughly the same, and the extra 2GB of VRAM on the 480 might turn out to be very useful over the next two years.

thank you so much!!!!!!!!!

Rise of the Tomb raider is much better run on the GTX 1060 than the RX 480. The GTX 1060 is more powerful in most games while the RX 480 only take advantage in games like Hitman. If your budget is $200, get the EVGA 1060 3GB, if your budget is around $250 go for the 6GB 1060. If you have a FreeSync monitor go for the RX 480. Also if you play on CrossFire/SLI get the RX 480, 2 of them are as powerful as GTX 1070/1080, keep in mind the power draw.

I can't imagine this is true when you're at over 6GB of VRAM usage. I was playing on 1920x1200 (i.e. 1200p, not 1080p), but my VRAM useage went well over 6GB. Also, it ran at 60fps easily on my R9 390, so unless you have a 144Hz screen, I don't see a lot of value in it. If you're at 1440p (or plan on it), the 480 with it's extra 2GB of VRAM will surely beat a 1060 in an ever increasing number of games over the next two years (especially given that the 1060 probably won't even be driver optimised for by then, as nVidia tends to drop optimisation for older GPUs rather more quickly than AMD).

i've decided to go with the gtx 1060 because it does do better in most games right now and in a couple of years i can a get a job and get a really nice GPU so by the time the rx 480 would be better ill be getting a new GPU and i doubt graphics will drastically change in the next two years where 2gb more of vram will give me a lot better fps
