Nehalem i7

Ivy Bridge i5, i7
Haswell i5, i7
Skylake i3, i5, i7

If you want a new one, go with a Skylake system with DDR4 RAM. Perhaps an i5-6500/6600k would be nice. If too much, can go with i3-6100 which would allow upgrade to i5/i7 in a couple years or more.

Would highly recommend staying away from 4th (5th as well I guess but thats enthusiast) and 6th gen i7s. You can if you really want but any 2000,3000 or 4000 or 6000 series I5 k series would suit you well. If youre a fan of buying second hand, cpus are pretty reliable. Would recommend 4690k as the platform is still in date and Ddr3 is pretty cheap and Lga 1150 boards arent too bad in price.
